Cinco de Mayo is coming up, that would be a great day in the park with all the hoopla going on that day.

FreeThinker if you come to the meet-up please bring the fruitcake

  • Trevor,

Air Force Apprecitaion Day is in September. My Saturdays are pretty open for most of the summer so if there's another that works better let me know. I think that Warren said that if the 18th didn't work he wouldn't be available until sometime in June.

  • Well bazookaman I guess Pat & I shouldn't be stopping to talk to you up at wal-mart.

I'll let Pat know what you think of those who will attend the meet-up. We are Americans no matter which way you look at us. I'm not sure if you think we fall into your left wing group however we are Independents who voted for Obama and will go to the meet-up......

No, I'm not coming to any leftwing meetups, Wayne. I don't break bread WITH----nor play music FOR-----commie lovers & supporters.

  • Nope, I am not a "commie lovers". I am definitely a Capitalist.

    However, I am anti seditionist.

  • Zook You write lengthy comments and I don't have time to answer every thing you say in them. That remark about going to the meet up caught my eye and I needed to say something about it.

Your comment sounded as if you were saying anyone who goes to that meet-up are commies.

I really don't care if no one reads what I write, I am not here to win a popularity contest. I don't write to see if I get the most attention.

I don't feel there is anyone who reads or comments on these blogs are commies who support communism or idea's. I don't understand because someone doesn't have the same opinion as you do they are marked by you as traders, commies, and etc.

There is not one person that I know of who said they would come to the meet-up support communism.

We all love this Country and right-wing conservatives are not the only ones who live here.

I don't call you names because I don't happen to agree with you.

  • I for one would like to ban any talking of politics at the meet up. Not a good start to face some one face to face and not get to know them, because politics got them off on a negative start. Who knows some could form long lasting relationships if it wasn't for Politics.

Then there are those that don't want to move outside their safety net...........

One of the major problems with debating g issues on these blogs is that we can't see the non verbals or see facial expressions. My guess is that in person we're closer on so.e issues than we realize.

I understood your comment and knew the wolf den was humor, which I like and the blogs sure could use humor off and on. My safety net comment wasn't aimed at you. It was for those who are afraid to mingle with those they don't agree with when it comes to politics.

Sheesh, I haven't read in a few days, and it's about impossible to read all this and have a clear idea of who thinks what.

I hope you all that go to the BBQ have a really good time. I thought about it too, and there are a couple I'd like to meet. Warren and Tundra Rat come to mind right off. Others seem to never comment any more that I'd have liked to meet. But it looks like there will be some there that like Mike, I am not going to be loose time over. You know, they say (not verbatim) "You are who you surround yourself with" And I"m not going to willingly step into that. I'm pretty sure I'd like to meet others of you, if I have not already, but who knows, maybe there will be others too. Just THIS one is not for me as it stands.

I do hope you leave the politics at home and just get to know one another better.

I'm glad you're having it at a public location too, not in a "secret location" like apparently there was before. I must have missed that one.

The ones I was at, were all very nice, and was so glad to have had Joe at them ...

  • I hope we have the blog meet up some time this summer. I would like to have it open to anyone who reads or comments on the blogs. And no talking of politics or religion, just a fun get together. It would be nice if we could have a picnic.

The last meet up was in November which I think was organized by Jessie in November 2012 and it was a closed meet up, invitation only and the location wasn't put out in public. If you were invited Jesse gave you the location.

I only know of the 2 meet ups that I didn't go to. The first one was at your house Jesse and the 2nd was by invite.

The only one I have gone to is the one in Carl Miller Park. It wasn't exactly an arranged meet up. It was meeting those who came to see Carl play. I showed a group picture that was taken of those who were there.

Those 3 meet ups are the only ones I know about.

-- Posted by MsMarylin on Sun, Apr 21, 2013, at 10:27 AM
  • Jessie's first meet up was at her house and it was an open meeting for everyone who reads or comments on the blogs. I wasn't able to go to that one.

She posted pictures of the meet up on her blog. Jessie & Wayne, Zook, Joe, Brenda, & Bonnie. I can't remember if anyone else was there.

Then she had another one this last November when Bonnie came to Idaho to visit her family. This one was a closed meet up only by invitation.

-- Posted by MsMarylin on Sun, Apr 21, 2013, at 11:52 AM
  • I agree Patrick If were going to have a blog meet up it should be open and in a public location, which makes it more open.

Maybe sixguns, trevor, lamont and Zook and anyone else that plays music will come and provide a few tunes for us. I would love to have it at legacy Park.

  • Warren if we ever get the meet up off the ground and running I hope you change your mind.

I was looking forward to talking to you about S5thW and wanted to ask you to bring some of your pictures of the house you grew up in. I'm confused about which one you lived in. Was it the one close to the street across from Browns Dairy? Do you have any more pictures of that area other then your house? I love history and would sure look forward to hearing your story's about Mtn Home when you were growing up here.

    MsMarylin,

The house I grew up in is 920 S5thW and is still there or at least a part of it is. There is a small cinder block shop/garage on the north side of the property. From what I can tell, the original house, which came from the Anderson Ranch construction camp, appears to have been demolished and replaced. The addition that my folks had built in 1963 or so may still be part of the house, but I'm not sure.

I'm think I've still got pictures of the place. Maybe I'll use them for a future blog article.

  • -- Posted by TundraRat on Tue, Apr 23, 2013, at 9:29 AM
  • Warren that cinder block shop/garage is still there. It does look like an addition had been put on the house some time or another. Was that Ranch style house, north of your house there when you lived in the house? Thae ranch style house looks pretty new.

What about that old 2 story house that sits beyond the ranch house. The 2 story sits on the corner, and I heard at one time it was Rex Kite's house and I think at one time it had belonged to a lawyer who raised sheep.

-- Posted by MsMarylin on Tue, Apr 23, 2013, at 9:19 PM
  • *

The ranch style house wasn't there when we left in 1967. Rex lived in the two story house then and worked for Idaho Power. I think the lawyer bought it from Rex or his family. Rex bought the place from Bonney Oyarazabal in the mid-60s.

Bonnie was a Basque sheepman. I think his sheep operation was called Bruneau Sheep Company. The lambing sheds were east of Hammett between the railroad and the river. The turn off was just east of the old Highway 30 railroad overpass. The summer place was out in the desert between Bruneau and Jackpot, east of the Bruneau Canyon. It was called SommerCamp.

From the cinder block garage to Bonney's house and from S 5th W east to the canal was all pasture back then. In the fall and winter months, Bonney kept Hereford (whiteface) range bulls there. He was gored several times while feeding them and eventually put horn weights on the bulls to try to prevent it from happening again. The crazy part of it was, when he was laid up, his wife fed the bulls and she could walk anywhere among them, scratch their noses and all they might do was nudge her a little. If memory serves me, her name was Marie or Maria.

The single story part of the house on the north side is the part that the folks added in 63. The two story part is where the Anderson Dam house was.

Until the dairy was built, the only thing west of the street were the apartments that belonged to Bill Devlin. They were originally tar-paper buildings moved from MHAFB and remodeled into apartments and rented back to airmen with families. The Devlin family owned everything between S 5th W and the old Meadows trailer park and Airbase Road and the sagebrush back then. They also owned the Canyon Theater, the Motor-Vu Drive-in and a lot of other rental properties.

  • I'm not a huge fan of G W Bush but I keep hearing people stating that he started two wars. And I do hve to disagree with that for two reasons. 1) The war in Afghanistan was started by terrorists who attacked the US (remember the twin towers?). 2) The war in Iraq started in Jan 1991 under the Sr. Bush and we've had a military presence there ever since. The Air Force and Navy were still flying interdiction missions and dropping bombs on targets from day 1 through the 2002 ground invasion. So that war never really ended

His mistake was believing that all people embrace democracy in a similar way as we do. You can't build governements in our image unless the ingigenous people want that type of government and are willing to fight for it themselves.

Just my opinion, agree or don't it's your choice.

  • Since this IS "open" I'd like to break ranks and share something I experienced a while back:

Our clothes washer kicked the bucket, so I told Momma "no worries, I'll go to the laundry mat while we shop for a new one". After meeting a VERY helpful and kind woman working the counter, I noticed small white envelopes taped to about 6 dryers. I asked if they were out of service, and she said "Just go read the envelpose; we have no idea how they got there". I put our laundry in the washers and took a gander. SOMEONE had actually placed two quarters in envelopes (50 cents will run a cycle) on the front of each dryer. They had written "Random Act of Kindness" on the envelopes. While I waited for my wash cycles, I say SEVERAL people stare, get misty eyed, and use the quarters. Someone who decided to donate three lousy dollars affected MANY people that day, including me. Three simple bucks went a long way. This really happened right here in Mt Home. Kinda reminded me that there are still alot of good things going on.

-- Posted by sixguns on Thu, Apr 25, 2013, at 3:45 PM

Then there was that large side order of French Fries with ketchup made by the company owned by SoS John Kerry's (who BTW served in Vietnam) wife. I did make sure that the Swiss cheese was placed UNDER the American cheese though. And I did wash it down with an adult beverage that helps Idaho farmers.

These people are Muslims, at least some of them are, but being Muslim doesn't make someone part of the Muslim Brotherhood. That's just what that tricky e-mail is trying to make you believe but it's telling you a whopper. It's called guilt by association.

  • Where are you reading about "the largest non-military arms deal in US history"? What is a non-military arms?

I'm suprised that you are reading something that yahoo got from "The Blaze" a radical web site founded by Glenn Beck.

"Lewis Black recently diagnosed Glenn Beck as suffering from "Nazi Tourette's." But as anyone who has followed Beck's delusional rantings knows, that's just part of his condition.

Beck also suffers from Obama Derangement Syndrome, conspiratorial paranoia, messianic megalomania, as well as chronic douchebaggery." - Daniel Kurtzman

The DHS orders for ammunition and arms purchases are a matter of public record. And while they may have come up on something that Beck was associated with, I remain curious as to why DHS might need such a large ammo stockpile and so many fully automatic rifles.

  • What I was asking Moral majority was where he got the news that this was the "largest non-military arms sale in US history". Public records most likely don't say "Wow, this is the largest non-military arms sale in history!"

Regarding DHS orders for ammunition and arms purchases, here are some facts.

    1. The GAO (works for Congress) is just starting an investigatiion of this.

    2. The DHS denies that it is buying what is claimed.

It looks to me like Congress is trying to distract the American public with yet another conspiracy theory. I think I'll wait for the results of the investigation before wondering too much.

    -- Posted by History_Nerd on Tue, May 14, 2013, at 1:08 PM
  • Did you know that the Coast Guard reports to the DHS? Here are some facts as reported by BreitBart.com. The cut and paste is below.

MYTH: DHS purchased 750 million rounds of several different types of ammunition in August 2012.

FACT: The DHS contract never stated 750 million rounds at any time. It is a five year contract with a maximum purchase of 70 million rounds over the life of the contract. Military Times recently addressed this issue as well.

MYTH: DHS purchased an unprecedented 450 million rounds of .40 S&W 180gr hollow point bullets in 2012.

FACT: This is a standard five year contract that follows a historical purchasing pattern of DHS. Furthermore, it is not an "unprecedented" purchase by DHS. In fact, it is not even a purchase by DHS but by Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Starting in 2003, orders of 50 million and 225 million .40 S&W hollow point ammunition totaling 275 million rounds were purchased. After the expiration of the five year contracts in 2008, ICE purchased an additional 575 million rounds of .40 S&W hollow point ammunition with two separate orders (200 million and 375 million). Now, with the expiration of the 2008 contract, ICE has ordered a maximum of 450 million rounds over the next five years.

MYTH: DHS recently purchased 21.6 million rounds for their New Mexico Training Center.

FACT: The math doesn't add up. The FedBid listing is actually for 240,000 rounds.

MYTH: The estimated 1.6 billion rounds purchased by DHS would sustain the military for over 20 years.

FACT: This myth was even reported by Forbes. While this number is comparable to rounds expended at the height of combat in Iraq, the actual ammunition produced for the military annually is, quite ironically, 1.6 billion rounds. Many conspiracy theorists are not accounting for ammunition expended in training.

A well-trained police officer will expend a minimum of 2,000 to 5,000 rounds per year, yet may never fire their weapon in defense. There is a significant disparity between rounds fired for training and those fired in a real world scenario.

Similarly, DHS agencies train quarterly, with an expectation of using 1,000 rounds per year per firearm for training and qualifications, while an officer may never fire a single round from their firearm on duty.

MYTH: DHS purchasing a wide variety of calibers for training means they are training for war with the American people and to utilize common civilian weapons.

FACT: DHS has purchased large quantities of ammunition in a variety of calibers once in 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012. The orders included .22 LR, .44 Magnum, 7.62 x 39mm, .45 LC, and a variety of other popular calibers to be used at several Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers across the country by a wide variety of agencies and entities.

MYTH: The government is purchasing 1.6 billion rounds to cause shortages on the civilian market.

FACT: Actually, the total number of rounds purchased from late 2011 to 2013 is less than 800 million rounds over five years. Conspiracy theorists have overestimated the round counts by at least 800 million rounds. Current orders mirror prior purchases totaling 766 million rounds from 2006-08 and 454 million in 2003, all over five year periods.

The total for government purchase orders on a per year delivery basis calculates out to less than 160 million rounds purchased this year. For perspective, the National Shooting Sports Foundation and NRA estimate a minimum of 10 billion rounds of ammunition is produced domestically annually. This translates to the Department of Homeland Security affecting 1.6% of the market share of ammunition domestically produced.

A recent response by the Department of Homeland Security to Senator Tom Coburn reflects even lower numbers. In 2013, DHS expects to purchase $37 million of ammunition. This total is in between the last two years of purchases and puts their total round count closer to 105 million rounds. In reality, DHS has closer to 1.05% of the total market share for this year and far less than the last three years.

MYTH: Then why can't I find ammo? What's causing the shortage?

FACT: We're causing the shortage. As an employee for a major firearms retailer, I can testify we receive shipments of the three highest demand calibers (9mm, .22 LR, and .223 Rem/5.56 NATO) at least 3-5 times weekly and in quantities far exceeding our normal shipments. We see as many as 1,000 boxes of ammunition disappear in as little as four hours.

People are responding to the unknown with fear and hoarding of ammunition. Manufacturers are replenishing the shelves, but the civilian market is buying it too fast due to warranted (and unwarranted) concerns. Don't believe me? Ask your dealers, or wait at a local Wal-Mart.

MYTH: If the government isn't stockpiling, why would they purchase so much at once? To save money?

FACT: The government purchases large quantities of ammunition in ID/IQ (Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity) orders, only guaranteeing to purchase as little as 1,000 or 100,000 rounds per year. The large orders lock in rates in the event ammunition prices increase as they have in recent years.

For instance, a large order means DHS can purchase ammunition in 2012 at 2008 prices from a contract secured in 2007. However, it can translate to manufacturers passing the cost onto consumers. But remember, these orders account for less than 1.6% of the annual market share for just domestically produced ammunition--not including foreign imports. For now, price increases are demand related.

  • There is two or more sides to every question Moral majority. The quote below from your Smith would be the most disturbing to me, except that I think it's just big talk. Tomasky/The Daily Beast isn't trying to impose their "collective worldview" on people any more than Smith is.

"If Tomasky and The Daily Beast want to impose their collective worldview on the rest of us and dismantle our individual freedoms guaranteed in natural law and the Bill of Rights, then I'm afraid they'll have to fight us for them. In the end, legal precedence is irrelevant. Political precedence is irrelevant. Political party is irrelevant. Historical precedence is irrelevant."

  • Do you ever wonder why people can't list the 11 embassy attacks under Bush? Two reasons: (1) the Democrats didn't use them for political gain and (2) there were too many to remember. Here they are.

    1. June 14, 2002, U.S. consulate in Karachi, Pakistan - Suicide bomber kills 12 and injures 51.

    2. February 20, 2003, international diplomatic compound in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia- Truck bomb kills 17.

    3. February 28, 2003, U.S. consulate in Karachi, Pakistan - Gunmen on motorcycles killed two consulate guards.

    4. July 30, 2004, U.S. embassy in Taskkent, Uzbekistan - Suicide bomber kills two.

    5. December 6, 2004, U.S. consulate in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia - Militants stormed and occupied perimeter wall. Five killed, 10 wounded.

    6. March 2, 2006, U.S. consulate in Karachi, Pakistan - Suicide car bomber killed four, including a U.S. diplomate directly targeted by the assailants.

    7. September 12, 2006, U.S. embassy in Damascus, Syria - Gunmen attacked embassy with grenades, automatic weapons, and a car bomb (though second truck bomb failed to detonate). One killed and 13 wounded.

    8. January 12, 2007, U.S. embassy in Athens, Greece - A rocket-propelled grenade was fired at the embassy building. No one was injured.

9 July 9, 2008, U.S. consulate in Istanbul, Turkey - Armed men attacked consulate with pistols and shotguns. Three policemen killed.

    10. March 18, 2008, U.S. embassy in Sana'a, Yemen

Mortar attack misses embassy, hits nearby girls' school instead.

    11. September 17, 2008, U.S. embassy in Sana'a, Yemen - Militants dressed as policemen attacked the embassy with RPGs, rifles, grenades and car bombs. Six Yemeni soldiers and seven civilians were killed. Sixteen more were injured.

Did the US order our support forces to "Stand down" on any of those occassions?

    -- Posted by wh67 on Fri, May 17, 2013, at 3:43 PM
  • I don't know if there was an order to stand down in these 11 other cases. Probably not. Like Benghazi there wasn't time to act.

If you research this more carefully you will find that there was no evidence of a "stand down" order in Benghazi. It's just another scary accusation to keep the far right conservatives under obedient control.

Can we please deal with facts not with political accusations? Congress has investigated this to the extreme. If you think the Republicans had any facts to back up their claims don't you think that this would be in a Congressional report?

  • "You might be asking yourself why Republicans are so good at cracking the whip on others while they are incapable of personifying even the most remote semblance of fiscal discipline when they are in charge. Good question. For that matter, why can't Speaker John Boehner get anything done in the House without the help of Democrats? Boehner has only been able to pass Sandy relief and the VAWA (finally on both) because Democrats rescued him from his own party's extremism. Modern day Republicans are keen on demonstrating repeatedly that they can't govern and aren't interested in legislating anything other than women's bodies.

Republican lawmakers are very busy trying to bully the IRS into not looking into whether tea party groups are actively trying to influence elections. Also, Benghazi! And Republicans are very busy embracing a short-lived love for first amendment rights. Have no fear, they are still too busy to get any actual work done. But they do have that 37th vote on ObamaCare because they are the party of anti-discipline and fiscal recklessness."

  • Warren do you have any evidence from the congressional investigation that there was a stand down order? I didn't think so.

-- Posted by Geordey on Sat, May 18, 2013, at 12:19 AM
  • Geordie, in fairness there may have been a stand down order although I haven't seen evidence of that. I have read that there wasn't time for the U.S. military to intercede. If there isn't time, then that it is kind of like a stand down just like in the 11 embassy attacks under Bush.

    -- Posted by History_Nerd on Sat, May 18, 2013, at 12:25 AM
  • This is what the Accountability Review Board determined in regards to the "stand down" claim. The Accountability Review Board is bi-partism.

"The Board determined that U.S. personnel on the ground in Benghazi performed with courage and readiness to risk their lives to protect their colleagues, in a near impossible situation. The Board members believe every possible effort was made to rescue and recover Ambassador Stevens and Sean Smith.

The interagency response was timely and appropriate, but there simply was not enough time for armed U.S. military assets to have made a difference."

I think that history will look back at the seemingly never ending investigations of Benghazi, and treat it the same as McCarthyism, a time when Joe McCarthy and some, but not all Republicans, went crazy pursuing unending investigations chasing an enemy because hate gets the big headlines.

I want Congress to work on legislation and drop the effort to try to get Clinton in the hopes that she then won't be a presidential candidate in 2016.

  • There's nothing like a good old conspiracy theory is there Moral majority?

On the bogus Stalin quote, this is what someone else said about it.

"Tea Party people are all about polemic, and not much on accuracy. If a Tea Partier claims something, you should assume most of the claim is bogus. They claim to be experts on the Constitution, but then led the national groans against the census -- apparently overlooking the Constitution's requirement that the census be taken. This is another case where the smell of error is strong."

  • Moral majority can you back up your accusations?

-- Posted by Geordey on Tue, May 21, 2013, at 8:07 PM
  • I'll assume that means that you are unable to provide documentation because your information is false.

    -- Posted by History_Nerd on Wed, May 22, 2013, at 12:00 PM
  • My opinion is that we should stick to the facts except when discussing Santa Claus or the Tooth Fairy.

  • If you can't support your accusations Moral majority, then your commemnts are kind of irrevelant and boring. Maybe a blog like somethnig on Sesame Steet might work better for you?

    -- Posted by History_Nerd on Thu, May 23, 2013, at 1:12 AM
  • That's okay. I pretty much ignore what you post anyway. Your don't do enough research to be worthy of much attention. I agree with some of your conservative opinions but so far you are not producing valid, documented information on your accusations.
