  • You think it's just as simple as that? Can we consider, here, for a moment, that the GOP regularly shoots down reasonable proposals to end irresponsible tax breaks for wealthy citizens/corporations and cease ridiculous bonuses for Wall Street companies and execs? This money comes out of the budget used to run our country, too, don't forget.

Also, I'd like to point out that most people are fully aware of how much our war deficit has grown, but what many forget to mention is that several NATO allies are slacking in their responsibilities to ensure global law enforcement and the weight unfairly falls on the US. The recent decision to carefully pull out of Afghanistan is a reflection of how committed our current Commander-In-Chief and his staff are to reducing our military expenditures-- they're doing what they can, as fast as they can, without wrecking the house of cards that is the brittle Middle East situation.

One more point: please don't forget how Bush and his cronies unwisely chose to do business with contractors proposing bloated, shady budgets, which left our nation with even more debt and embarrassment.

(Forgive my disjointed delivery; I'm writing with a toddler on my lap.)

It didn't take me long to figure out your what your initials (AH) stood for.

  • To Mr.427539: Wow. I'm really surprised and disappointed at your low-blow, there, with my name. You must have missed the first part of this request by the site: "Please be respectful of others and try to stay on topic." Very unclassy of you. Even though we see things differently you don't have the right to remark in that way-- as far as I can tell, I wasn't anywhere near being personally disrespectful with my last comment.

To "MtnHomer": Regarding this statement: (sic) "Americans who want to are continuing to improve their lives - and those who don't want to, aren't." We both know it's not a black and white issue and it's very ignorant and prejudiced to assume this statement is true.

Here's a link to a 2010 NYT piece that, while not disagreeing totally with your opinion, does go further to clarify the situation, and sheds some light: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/14/business/economy/14leonhardt.html

I'm wondering if nobody argued the other points I made (Wall Street/Large Corporation Tax Breaks, Defense Contractor Lobbying and Actions, and the NATO allies) because they agree... or haven't read my response to the Mr. Bradbury's original piece in its entirety. We should all try to look at the big picture-- I'm sure all our feelings re: the state of the union aren't quite as disparate as they might seem at first glance.

  • To bazookaman: (regarding this statement) "It's not our responsibility to MAKE UP for the lack of our NATO allies to enforce 'global law enforcement.'"

-You're right-- it ISN'T solely the job of the US to protect and defend the world, which is why I implied so in the first place. If we chose to sit on our collective hands and never become involved it would be worse than assuming the unfair weight we've been carrying. Things are changing, though-- The issue of equitable responsibility among allies is being strongly discussed among our world's leaders-- I believe (except for the defense contractors and the uninformed) everyone in the US pretty much wants the same thing.

RE: your second comment: It's because our country is part of NATO-- it's not anything to do with our Constitution, which deals with governing here at home.

One thing I think we can all agree on is that the US has been doling out world assistance more liberally than we can afford, which is unfair to our citizens, present and future.

I agree there is a percentage of "welfare bums", as you say, but there are many more deserving individuals who are being cast by the wayside due to budget cuts on necessary assistance programs. The welfare system is drastically out of balance, but it should never be eradicated- to do so would be cutting our noses of to spite our faces.

As far as illegal aliens and "anchor children" go (you didn't state that, exactly, but I know we understand each other, here), I also feel the US has been too accommodating and I feel we should be more strict regarding these people.

  • The waste IS atrocious and needs to stop-- we all agree, there. We have to take care of our own citizens, first- nobody can argue that... and I never tried to. Who are you looking to fight against? Me? It seems you're both ranting so vehemently (and hitting CapsLock so much) you missed my point.

I think MtnHomer didn't read the link I shared. Also, I believe he/she assumes I said we needed to raise taxes, when all I've ever stated is that we need to stop managing the revenue irresponsibly and wasting the taxes our government does collect. All your overly-capitalized statements, facts & figures simply underline and correlate with what I stated initially-- that the government has been wasting money for years, and the current administration has stated that they're researching overspending in an attempt to cut it out. If they're sincere (I hope), then we're on the road to recovery..., but if they're not (or take too long) we have to get pushy with our wishy-washy, representatives, many of whom aren't representing their constituency at all-- they're working for the lobbyists who are lining their pockets.

And you're right-- Nobody aids the US. Why would anybody feel the need when everybody in the world knows how wasteful our government has been for the past few decades?

-- Posted by AH on Tue, Jul 5, 2011, at 6:25 PM
  • The key word in my statement was "irresponsible", in regards to tax breaks... (and forcing *everyone* to be accountable for every taxable penny earned, if we're being fair) and notice the mention of corporations (I assume you've seen the reports of the billions they unfairly keep/receive). Cutting the most outrageous of the corporate tax breaks would aid in relieving quite a financial burden and is, from what I've been hearing, a point on the agenda to stop overspending. However, we all know these corporations have buddies in Congress, working to protect their irrational interests-- THAT has to end-- I know we all agree on this.

I hope, by raising awareness and pushing on our representatives, that the wasteful spending and useless programs will be outed and abolished... without sacrificing the programs that are worth keeping and necessary to a deserving portion of our nation.

I didn't realize that AH was your name, I thought it was maybe your initials. In a whole bunch of years, you won't have a clue what I think AH stands for, but apparently you have your own idea what AH stands for. Would you care to enlighten us?

Well Over 90 Percent of Republicans Are Liars

-- Posted by MsMarylin on Wed, Jul 6, 2011, at 8:10 AM
  • Your are so right Bazookaman. The only answer I ever get is everyone has always done it that way. Wish I could hear them say this one is doing it too and we need him gone. Have fun. Well over 90 percent of Republicans are liars. That must mean 100 percent or near it. Wonder how many in the current administration are liars?

-- Posted by arsenal on Wed, Jul 6, 2011, at 8:50 AM
  • Thanks MtnHomer: No it isn't what we deserve is it. Too bad they are all so greedy and self serving, kind of reminds me of some of the leaders of third world countries as that is exactly how they act. Wonder what the next election will bring and I hope it is none of these crooks, none of the time.

  • You will still be able to use your old light bulbs you just won't be able to buy any more. Manufacturers Will not be allowed to make them

-- Posted by MsMarylin on Thu, Jul 7, 2011, at 8:07 AM
  • We have the new light bulbs.........have had them for 7 years now and when we replaced the old bulbs with them, I noticed my first electric bill after installing them went down considerably. When we first bought them they cost a lot more then they do now and they last for 6-10 years. More years use then the old light bulbs and if you use them you will be conserving energy. These days it is nice if you can get your electric bill to go down and save energy at the same time..

I'm saving all my unused old bulbs, maybe I will leave them for my kids to sell on Ebay... lol !

-- Posted by MsMarylin on Thu, Jul 7, 2011, at 5:29 PM
  • Hey homer its your choice. If you don't want to buy the new bulbs you can always use candles or kerosene lamps. Just kidding LOL ! you can buy halogen incandescent bulbs they aren't getting rid of them...

We have the coiled ones and like I said we've been using them for years and haven't broken one yet.

-- Posted by MsMarylin on Thu, Jul 7, 2011, at 10:00 PM
  • With these politicians running the switch over to new lights we are lucky it didn't have a 1.4 million dollar price tag. And the contract was most likely given to a relative. It's all about government control. Hang clothes outside if you want to conserve electricity. Type of light bulbs doesn't make any significant difference. And didn't a Rhino from Michigan vote for this?

  • And it was George W who signed the bill in 2007 Obama is following through with what was already in place
