Local Web Sites & Lack of updates

Posted Saturday, October 29, 2011, at 2:39 PM

I don't know how many people read the other local web sites but I do to see if I know what is going on around me.

I am going to list a couple of examples where it appears sites could care less about posting their minutes.

http://www.elmorecounty.org/

I had send them an e-mail asking why the minutes never got updated,(this was last spring) I never got a reply but the the minutes finally got updated for those past 6 months and they haven't been updated since then. Guess its a big secret what the Commissioners are doing on our behalf. Take a look at Elections on the site, last update,"Click here for 2010 Election Calendar" that sure looks like old history we an election coming up. Take a look at the Sheriff still has Nick Schilz as Chief Deputy and he became Chief Of Police 1 Oct 2011.

No updates lately except a News Reporter wrote the summary for the new Chief, which I never did understand why the News would write the summary for him. Take a look at the article says Mayor and new Chief in the picture off to the side but Nick now has his picture on there. Haven't seen any updates on the site for some time now. Things just outdated on it.

I have talked to the Mayor and Council a number of times in the past about the Cities site and always got an answer. Tom Hiler at parks and rec got the site up to speed for the city, now its taken care of in City Hall. They also have been lacking in updates to keep it current, like the milky water due to cold water and outside heat far outdated.

I did talk with City Hall this pass week and water got taken off and some Halloween info put on the site. I then called the person taking care of the site with a couple of suggestions, just have to wait and see if anything happens with them........I did suggest that Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas coming up and maybe they could post what part the City is playing in them.

Bottom line our Tax Dollars are paying for all these Web Sites and there is alot more of them......My opinion is if they going to be there keep them up to date and current or do away with them.......I am sure there is alot that goes on in the County and City people would like to be able to read about at their own choicing to time of day.

Just a added note Bondy has put things on his site running for City Council ( www.bondyweb.com ) but nothing from the others running, guess we suppose to guess what they up to.

You would think that the department heads would feel responsible enough about the department that they run, to ensure it was updated at least weekly. Of course in today's "feel" good world there wouldn't be any single person responsible. Wow!

Your right midea, reason I decided to take a look at a few and post them, won't get their attention but maybe some others that would like to see what all those people are doing will contact them and let them know how they feel about it all.

The county is the "BIG OFFENDER" not keeping anything up to date. But walk in the Court House and everyone has a computor in front of them.

Did either of you stop and think that maybe the person(s) who are responsible for updating those websites have other jobs/duties to do besides that? Perhaps they are busy trying to do their day-to-day jobs and don't have the time that is necessary to stop what they are doing and list what is happening on a daily basis.

I am not trying to say that updating their webpage isn't important, I am just trying to get you to see the other side of the coin.

Yes highschoolmom, I did do just that. There are people that maintain the web sites right along with their other duties. Like I said the County is the worse of them and not updating since May of year for the Commissions doesn't leave room for not doing it. There are people that take care of the minutes and then it goes to the person that is going to enter it on the site. Don't need excuses, just do what is required of the site. when things don't get updated for months or over a year just no excuse.

Guess I better do this a different way.

I give the County Site and F over them keeping it up to date.

I give the MHPD a C for keeping up to date.

I give the City C+ to a B- for their updates.

You are definately right. IF there IS a web site, it needs to be regularly updated. Months at a time is just wrong. Maybe they are busy, but it is surely SOMEONE'S job, and if it's not done, then .... make sure they have time, and then it better be done.

Everyone is busy, but a job is a job.
