Idaho Flu Alert: Rising Cases and First Boise-Area Death Spur Warning to Protect High-Risk Residents

Monday, December 29, 2025

BOISE, Dec. 24, 2025 - Central District Health (CDH) is reporting the first influenza-related death in the Boise area. The woman, in her 90s, is Idaho’s third flu-related death this season. Last flu season, Idaho reported 87 influenza-related deaths.

Idaho is currently experiencing elevated flu activity and increased hospital visits during the 2025–2026 season. CDH urges residents to watch for symptoms of influenza, which can include fever, headache, fatigue, and sometimes cough or sore throat. While most people recover within a few days, flu can lead to serious complications and even death.

“Influenza can be unpredictable and dangerous, especially for older adults and those with underlying health conditions,” said Dr. Jaime Butler-Dawson, Epidemiologist at CDH. “When you get vaccinated, stay home when sick, and practice good hygiene, you’re not just protecting yourself, you’re helping keep your family and our entire community healthy.”

Those at higher risk include pregnant women, adults 50 and older, individuals with chronic medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes, or heart and lung disease, and people living in nursing homes or long-term care facilities.

How to protect yourself and others:

• Get your flu shot

• Stay home if you’re sick

• Wash hands often (20 seconds with soap and water)

• Cover coughs and sneezes

• Talk to your doctor about antivirals if you get sick

Flu vaccines are widely available at local pharmacies, clinics, and through your healthcare provider. For more information, visit: https://healthandwelfare.idaho.gov/health-wellness/diseases-conditions/flu-seaso...
