What is This Insect? The Western Conifer Seed Bug

In the late fall and early winter months there is an insect that seems to congregate around homes in Idaho. This quite large true bug (Order: Hemiptera) can be quite scary to some, especially if you find them on the outside or heaven forbid inside of your house.

The western conifer seed bug, Leptoglossus occidentalis Heidemann, is a leaf-footed bug (Family: Coreidae) with a maximum length of ¾”. The expansions on the hind tibia help identify this brown, white and cream-colored insect as a leaf-footed bug.
