Naive but not discouraged: Carpe diem

Wednesday, January 31, 2018

Over the weekend, my best friend and I started talking about our dream weddings; what kind of theme we want, who will be our maid of honor and wedding colors. It got me thinking about all the future can hold, the unpredictability of it all.

At any moment a person can face a life-altering event like a car accident, but fate works in wondrous way.

As much as I like to plan things, such as my dream wedding which is most likely years away, there's something thrilling about the spontanaity of life.

I think we could all, especially me, follow the advice of Friedrich Schiller, who said, "Lose not yourself in a far off time, seize the moment that is thine."

"Seize the moment that is thine" - pretty powerful words from a German dramatist.

Too many times I think the world gets wrapped up in the possibilities, the "what-ifs" of life, that we forget to focus on what is happening right now. We forget to take chances that could be passing us by.

I think we need to start making "carpe diem" a reality, not just a witty line from a well-read play or a favorite movie.

Talk to the cute girl in the coffee shop you see every day, or make a move on the guy you've liked for years. Finish your grand business idea, even if you don't have backers right now. Start the band you've always dreamed of having.

I'm not advising anyone to take a running leap into the unknown, but don't be afraid to test the waters - you might like what happens.
