Dear editor:

With sadness I read your editorial about exterior Christmas lights. In 1979, we lived in upstate New York in a little town with a population of 400. On a busy day we might see four or five cars go by. My kids wanted to put some lights on the trees outside. That year, as we took goodies to the elderly couple that lived across the street, they told us how the lights brightened their holiday season. The same was true with elderly sisters down the road, who could see the lights from their window.

Since being here in Mountain Home, we have had parents come to our door and thank us for the lights that delight their young children. How can you not drive past Albertson's and not get a warm feeling in your heart when you see the trees the city has decorated with lights? How can you not have joy and peace when you drive past Carl Miller Park? Christmas is a time to celebrate the birth of our Savior and spread a message of rejoicing and good cheer. I feel it is somewhat selfish to hide this behind closed doors and not share with the world. It's no competition, its sharing your feeling with others.

I feel that not having outside lights at Christmas is like a local newspaper without a local high school sports section. Oh, wait, now I understand the editorial.

Publisher's note: Thank you for your opinion. The Mountain Home News again thanks all of our sports partners that supply schedules, stats and information that allows us to give our youth/student athletes the credit due. We are happy to give that shout out but unfortunately do not have the staff to cover all events and must rely on those that do. We are deeply appreciative of our outside sources and will continue to reach out for that participation. Thank you.
