Emery Dale “Red” Haydal passed away with his family gathered by his side on Dec. 7, 2017 – a fitting day for the man who spent 20 years serving our country in the United States Air Force. He was 87 years old.

Red was born in Baker, MT, on May 3, 1930 to Hans and Emma Haydal. He had four brothers, Art, Allan, Harlan and Henning, who all preceded him in death. He spent his younger years working on various farms and ranches in Fallon County, Montana.

He enlisted in the military in 1949, and served in the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He served as loadmaster and flight engineer on KC-97s, EC121s, C-124, and C-141s. He earned five Air Medals and retired as a Master Sergeant.

He continued in the Civil Service working as an aircraft electrician. He really enjoyed his Temporary Duty in Australia, but it was his visits to Mountain Home that brought him to Hammett, ID for his retirement.

In 1957, he married his wife, Mary. Together, they raised six children – Barbara, Doris, Carl, Jim, Debbie Dale and Sue.

Dad enjoyed hunting and fishing, and loved restoring old tractors and using them to put up his hay every year. Everyone was amazed at his work ethic, and he was always willing to share his expertise with his neighbors and friends in the Hammett Valley.

He was preceded in death by his wife Mary, daughter Barbara, and grandson Michael.

He is survived by his children; Doris (Chris), Jim (Kay), Dale (James) and Sue (Bryan) as well as 12 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren.

A graveside service, with honors, will be held Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2017, 2:00 p.m. at the Idaho State Veteran’s Cemetery, 10100 M. Horseshow Bend Road, in Boise.

Arrangements are under the care of Rost Funeral Home, McMurtrey Chapel.

A Celebration of Life will follow on Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2017 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Red’s home in Hammett.

Memorials can be made to any local FFA Chapter or state FFA Association.
