St. Luke's Elmore paused to honor a resident of the hospital's long-term care unit by selecting her as the mother of the year.

Phyllis Allred received the honor during the annual Mother's Day tea social held earlier this month with her selection based on votes cast by members of the hospital unit's staff.

Allred celebrated the occasion while gathered by five generations of her family, all of whom live in the Mountain Home area. Known as "grandma" by those who know her best, Allred was born in New Mexico in 1924. She married John Allred in 1940, and they enjoyed many years together. They had a total of eight children: Cora, Jackie, Carma, Marjorie, John, Delayna, Anita and Lori.
