Library board delays decision on WECRD plan

Greg Andersen works with Scott Miskin and Nathaniel Pineo during a session at the Mountain Home Public Library on Monday. A proposal under consideration by the library board would provide library cards to people who live outside city limits but fall within the Western Elmore County Recreation District's boundaries. The cards would be funded by the recreation district.

Plans to provide library cards for residents outside of city limits remains on hold after the city library board tabled the discussion during a public meeting Feb. 2.

Under the proposal introduced recently by the Western Elmore County Recreation District, it would provide "scholarships" in the form of library cards to these residents.

I'd like to know the intent of the WECRD putting up $30,000 for county residents to get a library card. That's a lot of money, in my opinion and at $50 per family, is enough for 600 families. Very generous but doesn't that take away from revenue that the Library would be receiving if the interested families were paying the library directly for their card?

  • This should be a no brainer. I moved when I was twelve from town to less than a mile out (after the DI, before Cavasos) and the difference in price in the library card was a deterrent for my family to pay annually.

Availability of educational resources for the community - the town of Mountain Home and the townships in the county - is a revenue that cannot be calculated in monetary measure. These resources cannot be relied on by school libraries alone.

  • What in the world is the WECRD doing making agreements with the City library??? This has nothing to do with RECREATION. Come on REC District. You were going to dissolve the taxing district, but now you are off on your own crusades? This is a no-brainer. It's not recreation, so it's a no.

  • To propose that reading is not recreational would require a lack of cranial nougat.
