County commissioners Al Hofer and Bud Corbus present retiring Elmore County Sheriff Rick Layher with a shadow box containing an assortment of law enforcement memorabilia during a ceremony Dec. 27.

City and county officials and others from across the local area gathered at the county marine building Dec. 27 to thank Layher for his 40 years of law enforcement service to the citizens of this county, including 30 years as its sheriff.

Layher meets with well wishers during last week's gathering. "Reality hasn't hit yet," said Layher regarding his pending retired status whose added that his first order of business was to just get through the recent batch of cold weather that has kept the county and most of the northwestern United States dealing with the frigid temperatures.
