Searching for hidden treasure

Jacob Coffey pans for gold while Cody Schildgen watches during a demonstration held July 21 at the Mountain Home Historical Museum. For the past three years, the museum has hosted a yearly event for students participating in the city parks and recreation department's annual adventure camp. This year, museum director Debbie Shoemaker and her staff organized a hands-on gold panning demonstration on the lawn in front of the museum. There were several tubs filled with sand, gravel and iron pyrite, or fool's gold, with the youngsters invited to try their luck at gold panning. After all the campers got a chance to pan for fools gold, Shoemaker served the children lunch and explained more about mining in southern Idaho.
