UPDATE: Interstate reopens following crash

Tuesday, February 23, 2016

The westbound portion of the interstate between mileposts 95 and 99 east of Mountain Home reopened Tuesday morning following a two-vehicle crash late Monday evening that closed both sides of the interstate.

The crash involved a 2006 Dodge pickup driven by Tayler Kerns, 22, of Haines, Ore., driven by 2015 Volvo FedEx tractor driven by Travis Trowbridge, 27, of Boise.

According to a press release from the Idaho State Police, the truck driven by Kerns, which was pulling a trailer carrying a 2007 Dodge pickup, was stationary on the westbound right shoulder of the interstate when the trailer was struck from behind by the semi at 11:22 p.m. on Monday.

The second and third FedEx trailers overturned, and the vehicle came to rest in the median near milepost 97. The third trailer caught fire.

The eastbound and westbound lanes remained blocked for approximately five and a half hours as crews worked to clear the scene. Authorities rerouted traffic onto Old Highway 30 around the accident scene.

The eastbound lanes reopened around 5 a.m. Tuesday while the westbound side remains blocked at this time.

Kearns had two passengers in his truck at the time of the crash. They were Thomas Newbill, 29, of Durham, Calif., and Christopher Patrick, 23, of Baker City, Ore. No one was injured in the crash, and authorities added that Trowbridge was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the collision.

This crash remains under investigation by the Idaho State Police.
