Voters said 'no' to directors

Wednesday, November 11, 2015

Dear editor:

The recent Western Elmore County Recreation District (WECRD) board member elections resulted in Jana Borgolthaus and Rachelle Ruffing being defeated by over 60 percent of the voters.

Both of them ran on a platform of "Building Your YMCA," and both of them have spent the last year ignoring the public opposition to their YMCA "dream." They rushed the contract through to start the ground breaking on the YMCA when it became clear that a petition to eliminate the WERCD would have enough signatures to make the ballot, and they clearly made this election a referendum on "their" dream YMCA.

Now Jana Borgolthaus was quoted in the 11/5/15 Idaho Statesman as saying, "I know this is going to sound like sour grapes, but they spread enough lies and misinformation that the public was totally confused."

Translation: "The voters of Elmore County are too stupid to understand that we know best, and our YMCA dream is what they should really want."

Well, surprise, surprise -- the voters of Elmore County have spoken very clearly and loudly that they do NOT want the YMCA to build and run a local YMCA with WECRD taxes, and then charge taxpayers in the WECRD to use that facility. With Judy Mayne and Art Nelson on the board, we can now use our WECRD taxes to support many different recreation projects throughout the District, and not simply hand our taxes over to the YMCA.

Sincerely,

-- Peter Humm, Mountain Home
