Mountain Home High School's senior king and queen homecoming candidates pose for a group photo. A yearly homecoming tradition will change this year with the crowning of this year's king and queen planned during halftime at this year's homecoming game at Tiger Field.

Students at Mountain Home High School are fueling their Tiger spirit as they prepare for this year's homecoming game.

The week-long celebration culminates this Friday as the Mountain Home Tigers take on the Minico Spartans at Tiger Field across from Mountain Home Junior High School.

Events planned this year center around the high school's homecoming theme, "Many Tigers, One Roar," which was developed by the school's student council, said Dawn Nicholas, who serves as an advisor for the student organization.

The homecoming preparations began on Friday as students like Heather Dockstader and Christell Markham were busy painting the windows at U.S. Bank on North 2nd East Street.

"We're the amazing class. We're going to win the window decorating contest," Dockstader said as they used her hands to apply paint to the window, which replicated the jungle terrain that would later include a super-sized, muscle-clad tiger.

At the Les Schwab tire shop, the freshman class had etched out a similar tiger emblem on the windows looking out onto Airbase Road with the sophomore and junior classes designing other local businesses.

During the weekend, other students from each class decorated their respective hallways at the high school. Each one came decked out with posters, trinkets and baubles related to the homecoming theme and their own unique theme song.

Athletic competitions continue to highlight the competitive spirit leading into this week's homecoming game. It began Monday during the annual macho man volleyball match between the junior and senior classes.

Competitors representing the senior class went on to win that contest, three games to one.

Events move to Tiger Field today, Sept. 9, as the school's female junior and senior students compete in this year's powder puff football contest. Members of the school's football squads will serve as coaches during the game, which begins at 7 p.m. Admission is $2 or a donation of two canned goods per person.

Food collected during both athletic events will benefit local area food banks, Nicholas said.

Following the girls football game, organizers will hold a homecoming bon fire from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. in Optimist Park.

Another homecoming tradition continued last Friday as the school announced its candidates for this year's royal court. Men and women from each class were selected by their classmates during the annual voting.

However, that tradition will change this year as the high school crowns the homecoming king and queen during next week's football game. Both announcements will happen during halftime versus separately.

Homecoming week move into full gear Friday afternoon with a homecoming assembly in the high school gym. Students are encouraged to show up that day in their orange and black attire or their homecoming T-shirts as part of this year's Tiger Day.

The homecoming parade through Mountain Home will continue at 2 p.m. with pre-game festivities following at 4:30 p.m. during a tailgate party at Tiger Alley. The Mountain Home Tigers then put their pride on the line as they take on the Spartans at 7 p.m. that evening.

Homecoming week winds down during the fall homecoming dance on Saturday. The dance runs from 9 p.m. to midnight that night in the high school gym.

To promote the homecoming spirit, the high school continues to sell T-shirts featuring a front cover designed by senior Austin Coleman. Available to students, parents and the general public, people may order them through the high school's online store. Students can order the shirts in advance for $20 each, which includes a ticket to the homecoming dance. Those wanting the dance tickets by themselves can purchase them at the door for $10 each.
