Issues aired during WECRD town hall event

Wednesday, July 1, 2015
The Western Elmore County Recreation District is looking at building a 23,000 square foot recreation complex on South 18th East Street across from Mountain Home Junior High School.

A need for greater transparency and concerns over anticipated operating costs highlighted a list of issues aired during a town hall meeting Monday evening hosted by the Western Elmore County Recreation District.

More than 100 people gathered at Mountain Home High School during the nearly three-hour meeting for an update on an effort to build a community recreation center here that would offer programs under a partnership with the Treasure Valley YMCA.

I read the story and just wanted to point out that more time was spent by the WECRD and the Y in trying to tell everyone how great the center would be when/if built. There were many simple direct questions asked and one board member was great at not answering them. In fact several in the audience shouted out for them to just answer the question. The most honest and direct answer of the night..... Mayor Rist's response to why not to cover the City pool. Good on him for being transparent. The WECRD failed at being transparent and in fact failed to mention they were having a special meeting today at 4PM. If they truly wanted full community involvement, that would have been the time to announce the meeting. Epic fail again on the WECRD board.

  • The numbers keep changing. I would like to say it really hurt to hear Directors speak of our community so poorly! Why on earth would you continue to talk about how you would like to see this come to fruition to ensure there are good people in the community? That saddens me to think that people think so poorly of the town they live in and raise their children in. After I got out of the Air Force we had a choice to be ANYWHERE we wanted to be and we chose here! Why did we choose here? Not because it is the wealthiest town, but because of the people! There are some really great people in this town that care about others so much, and to hear over and over and over again how this all needs to change SUCKS! Please take some pride in your community, if you don't like it don't be running to some big wig Y to fix it for you! If you are standing for the right thing, then people will follow! The WECRD makes choices based on their wants and needs ALONE and it was perfectly clear in this meeting. When I have an issue with something I resolve it! Find people who have the same issues and stand tall together, BE THE CHANGE! Putting the community down and only focusing on a very select few people in the community is what is going to separate our community even more so. This isn't about 10% of the population, so stop making it out to be!
