Glenn Andrew Ryan, age 83 of Mountain Home, passed away on Sunday, May 10, 2015, at a Boise hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 26, 2015, at Rost Funeral Home, McMurtrey Chapel, and burial will follow at 1 p.m. at the Idaho Veterans Cemetery in Boise.

Glenn was born Nov. 20, 1931, in Tacoma, Wash. He grew up during the Depression and World War II. Life was tough, and food was scarce.

He attended Marymount Military Academy and Roosevelt High School. He met his future wife LaDean Phillips, "a scrawny cowgirl" complete with twin cap guns, while working at the family store.

Glenn began his career at Puget Sound naval Shipyard (PSNS) in Bremerton, Wash., and then was drafted for the Korean War. Before deploying, he married his cowgirl on Jan. 3, 1954, at a Baptist Church in Tacoma. After coming back, he resumed his career at PSNS and stayed there until he retired.

When he retired, he was presented with a plaque in recognition of his years of Federal Service at PSNS.

He was also told by his doctors that he needed to live in a drier climate if he wanted to live longer. He suffered from asbestos on the lungs due to all those years working as a general pipefitter in Navy Subs. Glenn and LaDean, along with their dog and cat, set off in a motorhome on a three-month tour of 13 states, deciding that Mountain Home suited them best. So they settled in Tipanuk to enjoy the fresh air of the desert where Glenn became involved in the community and acquired many friends.

Glenn through his life took every opportunity to explore anything that interested him. He read every book he could find and quickly became an expert photographer, sailor and woodworker.

His never-ending quest to master every challenge he took on was infectious, and he passed on the skills he developed, always willing to share his knowledge and lend a helping hand to any that needed it.

He lived his life with humor and humility along with a never-ending love for his family and friends and God.

Glenn is survived by his wife, LaDean; his son Daniel and his wife Kate Ryan of Shelton, Wash.; his son David and wife Erin Ryan of Las Vegas, Nev.; brother Frank and his wife Marge Ryan of Tacoma, Wash.; brother Doug and his wife Connie Ryan of Kent, Wash.; sister Suzie Magdanz of Red Bluff, Calif.; brother in-law Jim and his wife Arloah Phillips of Bremerton, Wash.; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one on the way.
