American Legion, honor guard demonstrated professionalism

Wednesday, May 6, 2015

Dear editor,

Last week, my family had the misfortune of planning and attending a funeral for my beloved grandfather, Alvin Andrews. For me, his was the first funeral with full military honors I had ever experienced.

I had never given much thought to the participation of the Air Force Honor Guard and American Legion. I think we can all appreciate the fact that each of these volunteers gave up their Saturday. But what was truly moving was the respect and reverence each of them displayed.

I doubt any of them even met my grandfather while he was alive, but I felt as if his service to our country was sincerely celebrated in each of their hearts. The 21-gun salute, folding of the flag and trumpeting of "Taps" had a profound effect on my family. I would like to tell the members of the Air Force Honor Guard and American Legion how grateful we are.

To each of you: On the days when it is difficult to put on the uniform and give valuable time for a solider you never even knew, please be sure of the significance of what you do. It means so much to grieving families that you honor their loved one with such dignity and regard.

Thank you very much for your service.
