Mountain Home drops four more baseball games

Thursday, April 30, 2015

The Mountain Home Tigers current losing skid reached eight with four more losses last week in a busy week of baseball.

Wood River 10, Mountain Home 7

The Mountain Home Tigers took the lead three different times but were unable to hold onto it, losing to the Wood River Wolverines, 10-7, last Monday at Wood River High School in Hailey in a non-conference game.

The Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Wood River tied it with two in the second.

Mountain Home scored three in the top of the third to go up, 5-2, but the Wolverines answered with three in the bottom half of the inning to knot the game at 5. Two runs in the top of the fourth put the Tigers up, 7-5, but the Wolverines struck for four in the bottom half to take the lead, 9-7. Wood River added another run in the sith to make it a10-7 final.

David Welle had the hot bat for the Tigers, getting two hits and driving in three runs. Derek Kellogg had a hit and two RBIs, Cody Blakemore and Luke Lockard had hits and RBI. Bailey Miller-Hodge and Curran Price also had hits and Zach Petersen scored two runs.

Tyler Abernathy pitched the first three innings for the Tigers, giving up seven runs, just three of which were earned. Bailey Miller Hodge, the second of three pitchers on the night for the Tigers, suffered the loss. Despite the loss, Tigers coach Matt Bundy thought his team played well.

"We switched leads three different times in a well-played game," the coach said. "Some guys got some playing time and performed well."

Skyview 14, Mountain Home 2

(Five innings)

The Tigers returned to conference baseball last Tuesday, traveling to Skyview High School in Nampa where they lost to the Hawks, 14-2, in five innings.

Mountain Home got off to a good start in the first inning, scoring two runs. But Skyview put six runs on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the inning, added three more in the second and five more in the fourth as they 10-runned the Tigers.

Mountain Home managed just three hits, those being singles by Bailey Miller-Hodge, Zach Petersen and Cody Blakemore. Blakemore suffered the loss, giving up nine runs in two innings, though just one of the runs was earned.

"We're pretty good at getting a couple runs early, but we're having some pitching problems," Coach Bundy said. "We've got sore arms, lack of pitchers, eligibility -- you name a problem, we've got it -- but that said, we really should be able to shore up our issues and play a good baseball game."

Bishop Kelly 15,

Mountain Home 3

(Five innings)

Pitching woes by the Tigers' pitchers helped the Bishop Kelly Knights to a 15-4, five inning win over the Tigers Thursday at Mountain Home.

Mountain Home took a 2-1 lead after one, but the Knights took advantage of two hits, two hit batters and an error to score four runs in the second and had five hits and four hit batters in the third when they scored eight more to go up, 13-3. The game ended by the 10-run rule after five.

Zach Petersen started for the Tigers, and was releaved in the second by Bailey Miller-Hodge, both of them having control problems. Petersen walked three and hit two batters, Miller-Hodge hit five and walked one. On a bright note pitching-wise, Cody Simpson pitched a scoreless and hitless inning.

"You give a team like Bishop Kelly 11 free base runners, it's going to end up biting you," the coach said. "You end up losing by 11 and you give them that many base runners -- you do the math, and it's pretty easy to see where we've got to fix things."

Bishop Kelly 3, Mountain Home 2

Bishop Kelly pushed across the wining run in the bottom of the seventh inning Friday night to edge the Tigers, 3-2, in conference baseball at Bishop Kelly.

Mountain Home scored a run in the first inning to go up, 1-0, but Bishop Kelly scored single runs in the second and third to go up, 2-1. The Tigers managed to tie the game with a run in the fourth, and the game remained tied until the Knights were able to score in the seventh for the win when Mountain Home was unable to complete a double play that would have ended the inning and sent it to extra innings.

"(Jesse) Cobos pitched a great game," Coach Bundy said after the game. "We held a 1-0 lead and a 2-1 lead before they tied it at two. Cody Blakemore is swinging it well and catching a good game.

"Bottom of the seventh, the game goes right down to a the second part of a double play and the runner beats it by half a step to score the winning run," the coach added. "It was a great game. Hopefully, we're back on track for some wins."

Both teams had six hits in the game. Cody Blakemore led Mountain Home with two hits. Jesse Cobos, Curran Price, Tyler McCall, and Derek Kellogg also had hits. Luke Lockard had an RBI.

Jesse Cobos, who beat the Knights, 2-1, earlier in the season, suffered the loss. He scattered six hits, while striking out five and walking five. Just two of the runs were earned.

The Tigers close out their regular season schedule this week. They hosted Middleton on Tuesday. On Thursday, they travel to Kuna with Friday a senior night game at home against Kuna. Friday's game has a 6:15 p.m. starting time. The District III 4A Baseball Tournament runs from May 4 to 7.
