Sharing the holiday spirit

Wednesday, December 24, 2014

Holiday lights and displays fill the front yard of Shaun and Linda Roddin's home at 1265 Chukar Circle as part of the couple's annual Christmas tradition.

The display, which has continued to grow over the past 15 years, includes at least 5,000 lights on the house with a separate utility system set up in their garage just to power every aspect of the display, which also includes music.

Shaun Roddin said that they begin to set up the lights and inflatable decorations right after Halloween with their work continuing up until they light up the display the evening of Thanksgiving.

Included in their holiday tradition is an effort to collect gifts for the Marine Corps' Toys for Tots campaign. This year, they collected enough toys to fill seven 40-gallon bags.

  • Over the past month as a OTR truck driver I've had the opportunity to travel the entire Pacific Northwest from Seattle to as far south and east as Dallas, Tx. I was tremendously disappointed at the lack of outdoor residential Christmas decorations throughout the entire region. My best estimate is about 1 in 25 or 30 homes had any kind of visible nighttime display. When I finally returned to Mountain Home the view looking down from I-84 was a heartening sight. Seeing so many Christmas lights in the residential areas was absolutely refreshing to see and rejuvenated my appreciation for the unique hometown community spirit that comes with living in Mountain Home. Kudos and "Thank You!" to ALL who worked so hard to put up and maintain holiday displays.
