Melanie Kastner

The Elmore County Sheriff's Office announced Wednesday that Melanie Kastner, 16, who went missing Oct. 16, has been located.

ECSO officials said Kastner apparently was found in Oregon following a routine traffic stop by an Oregon State Trooper in Bake City, Ore. She was one of the passengers in the vehicle and was detained initially in Baker City pending her return to Elmore County.

Kastner was last seen the morning of Oct. 16 at Mountain Home High School.

She was with an as yet unidentified male at the time. Chief Deputy Mike Barclay said the sheriff's office would be seeking an arrest warrant on the male and intends to have him returned to Elmore County. The exact charges were not immediately available, however.

The Elmore County Sheriff's Office is working with the Oregon State Police and the Baker City Police Department in the case, which remains under investigation at this time.

No further details were immediately available.

  • I will not allow information or comments from unreliable anonymous sources. We are following the story and if there is any other additional newsworthy information we will update. I am thankful she was located and returned to her parents. Thank you to all that were passing the word for a missing teen not at home.

  • I support Brenda Fincher's statement but just wish you would not allow "information or comments from unreliable anonymous sources" on every article you publish!

    Response by Brenda:
Thank you. Allowing comments from anonymous users is the nature of the beast on a web site. That is not coming from a news source but a comment and an opinion at that. I can either agree or disagree when reading and in most cases leave it there. I leave it to the adults to either take it with a grain of salt being taken as truth or an outright untruth and then choosing to comment back and forth or not. There are simple rules and boundaries I get to set whether individuals agree or not. When derogatory comments in nature are being made of a minor truth or not I will not allow it as it is in my opinion none of my business and do not care to have our website represented in that way. I leave that to the family and police. If there is an arrest or charges they will be presented in our police log or court notes. We had a missing child, she is found. Again for that I am thankful.
  • I am glad that she is safe.
