Fire department drains 'burnout fund' to aid fire victims

The apartment complex at Day Meadows sustained heavy damage during the fire Thursday morning. Two men were arrested in connection with the blaze.

The Mountain Home Fire Department has decided to drain its burnout fund to help the victims of last week's Day Meadows apartment complex fire.

The fund had stood at $9,000, but all of that is being disbursed. Money for the fund comes from donations and the proceeds from the Fireman's Ball (which will be held next month).

"We look at this as if it were 12 different structure fires," said Fire Chief Alan Bermensolo. One of the 12-apartment buildings at the Day Meadows subsidized housing complex was destroyed in the fire last Thursday, which allegedly was triggered by arson.
