Soccer girls open district tourney with loss to Skyview

Friday, October 17, 2014

The Mountain Home Lady Tigers opened the District III 4A soccer tourney with a loss at Skyview.

Earlier in the week, Mountain Home lost to Kuna and tied with Caldwell.

Kuna 7, Mountain Home 0

Kuna scored two goals in the first three and a half minutes of the first half, and added another goal three minutes later as the Lady Kavemen spoiled Mountain Home's Senior Night with a 7-0 conference win over the Lady Tigers in girls soccer.

Mountain Home was unable to get the ball in the net against Kuna, a team they beat 5-1 earlier in the season when they were much healthier.

"That is definitely not the Kuna we saw before," said Mountain Home girls soccer coach Kent Ogaard after the game. "Injuries aside, we lost Violet (Martinez), which, no question, is a huge part of our offense. The girls played hard. I think some of the nerves of Senior Night took over in those first two goals they just snuck in on us, and I don't think there was any looking back after that.

"As a coach, sometimes you can say maybe I made some coaching errors and maybe I put some people where they shouldn't have been," Ogaard said. "But on this one, I really have to say the girls needed to do their job on the field and we just didn't do that today, so we're going to address it and see how we can finish out our season and get ready for district, because it all resets then."

Missy Jessup had 10 saves on goal in the first half as goalkeeper. Tayde Rodriguez had six saves on goal in the second half.

Mountain Home 2, Caldwell 2

Mountain Home closed out its regular season schedule at Caldwell on Wednesday, battling to a 2-2 tie.

Jacey Carr and Hannah Bideganeta scored goals for Mountain Home.

Missy Jessup had four saves on goal for the Lady Tigers before being involved in a hard collision and setting out the second half. Tayde Rodriguez tended the goal in the second half and had three saves.

Although he would have preferred to head into district on a win, Coach Ogaard said he feels the Caldwell effort will provide momentum as they open district tourney play.

"Good momentum and morale on the team as we head to district," the coach said.

Skyview 1, Mountain Home 0

Mountain Home battled Skyview tough, but came up short, 1-0, Saturday in first round district tourney action.

Missy Jessup had seven saves on goal for Mountain Home.

"It was a very physical game," said Coach Ogaard following the game. "There were a total of five yellow cards between both teams.

The Lady Tigers still had confidence going into Monday's game with Kuna, the coach said.

"Nobody feels like we're out of this and we're looking for redemption (against Kuna)," he added.

The Lady Tigers battled Kuna Monday in an elimination game. Mountain Home split with Kuna during the regular season, winning 5-1 at Kuna and losing 7-0 last week in Mountain Home. Results were not available at press time.
