Letter to the Editor

Army better than the Air Force

Wednesday, October 1, 2014

Dear editor:

I am writing to you about the opinion that I have about the Air Force. My opinion is that the Army is better than the Air Force. Here are my reasons why.

* The Air Force originally came from the Army. So in a way, Air Force Appreciation Day should be Army Appreciation Day. Because, without the Army, we wouldn't have the Air Force.

* The Army has more and better weaponry to protect the U.S. more effectively. I mean, the Army has tanks and protects the borders and what does the Air Force do? Sit around monitors all day and fly drones to do all their work.

* The Army is actually sent to battlefields to protect civilians, to train rebels, to defend our country, and attack the enemy. All the Air Force does while the Army is out fighting is sit around behind the safety of their monitors and planes in the sky.

  • Tyson, I'm not sure if you have ever really grasped all that our Air Force does.

Members of the Air Force also staff military hospitals, in a lot of danger when deployed (hospitals are great mortar targets).

Members of the Air Force fly and maintain planes that aid efforts and fight too. Those people are also in danger. Yes, UAVs are available, but we do still have bodies in many of the aircraft we deploy.

I could go on for days, but ultimately, you should understand something:

Playful feuds between the branches are all in good fun (chair force, etc). But your article was EXTREMELY disrespectful to the men and women who similarly write a check up to and for their life in exchange for you to so ignorantly run your mouth.

At the end of the day, all of our military personnel are major assets to our country and are all deserving of respect.

  • Don't know what's more ridiculous, this letter or that Mountain Home News actually put this out there.

Wow, guess I will let those AF members at Mt Home AFB that are getting ready to deploy and support their sister services that they should not go since all they do is sit behind the safety of their monitors and in their planes. I assume my trips to the desert carrying a weapon and being fired upon were because people thought I was in the Army not the Air Force. Sounds like Tyson Baker needs to come to the base and hear the stories of those that have deployed recently or if he is able, raise his right hand and join the AF to see what truly goes on. And yes, I have been shoulder to shoulder with not only my sister service members but military from other countries as well. All are fine citizens and deserve all the respect we can give them. Lastly, if Mr. Baker would like to meet and hear some of my stories, let me know. I will gladly enlighten him.

Well I guess my 23 years of Air Force service and 3 deployments to combat zones (with live ammo) were just barely enough to allow people to say stupid things all in the name of freedom. For that Mr. Tyson Baker you are welcome. You obviously are totally clueless and are just looking to start a fight so...put your money where your misguided thoughts are and enlist and serve your country in any branch of the military. Heck even the Coast Guard gets shot at once in a while and serves in harms way on a daily basis. Give me an opportunity to meet you and I'll gladly give you a quarter - cause you son you need to buy a clue about the realities of serving in any branch of the service. Air Force members are killed and injured while fighting these wars, they have been since the first aerial weather balloons and the observation planes of WWI. Yeah come on out to the base and we'll see if we can get you cleared and give you an up close and personal lesson on what the Air Force does and doesn't do. And while I'm at it, shame on the Mountain Home news for allowing something so misguided to be printed in this towns only newspaper - the town who would dry up and blow away within 5 years of the wrong BRAC decision. Mr. Tyson Baker you had your freedom of speech and now - so did I. Aim High.

  • I undoubtedly knew this was going to draw fire. Being a prior Air Force dependent of 32 years with a Vietnam Veteran father and an husband that is an Army Vietnam Veteran I have the utmost respect for all branches of our military forces with personal opinions and very emotional feelings and consequences coming from family and friends first hand. As a publisher of the newspaper I have to respect an opinion drawn on what I would consider misinformed guidance or just plain ignorance on talking about something not known or understood. I appreciate the civil comments made and addressed to our writer who in turn may learn a lesson or two in what makes a community of neighbors and friends and comments that reflect support and respect rather than one that draws hurt feeling and verbal retaliation. Consequences of our thoughts and written word can sting and can only hopefully be an educational moment to teach or will be totally disregarded of which is a right also. This is my opinion and I thank you for my chance to share my feelings.

  • When I was in basic training in the Army the platoons in the company started making up songs about each other and then we would sing them before the Captain and Sergeants showed up. It was fun but it did build some antagonism, as opposed to teamwork, in the company and the Captain after about a week told us to knock it off.

My immediate family, me and my siblings combined, have been in every branch of the service except the Coast Guard and the National Guard. We had interesting stories to tell each other and we each had a worthwhile job.

So Tyson, I'm sorry that people got so mad at you, but if you do the crime, then you do the time. :-)
