Homecoming week underway

A number of special events are held during the week, such as the Macho Man volleyball game, where members of the regular volleyball squad serve as coaches for the boys who volunteered to play. Above, one of the coaches politely suggests better play from one of the boys on the court.

Students at Mountain Home High School are showcasing their Tiger spirit this week with a plethora of homecoming activities.

The week-long celebration culminates Friday evening as the Mountain Home Tigers take on the Jerome Tigers at Tiger Field across from Mountain Home Junior High School.

Events planned this year center around the high school's homecoming theme, "Experience the Magic." Students are drawing their magic inspiration based on classic and current Disney animated movies.

The homecoming preparations actually began Friday afternoon of last week as students from each class started decorating the windows of four local-area businesses to spread the community's homecoming spirit.

At the U.S. Bank office, seniors like Katelyn Ackley and Mori Guillen were transforming the windows facing North 2nd East Street into a supersized tiger shark. Their creation was taken from the "Finding Nemo," with the shark tailored to fit the motif of the Mountain Home Tigers.

Down the street at the Papa Murphy's storefront on American Legion Boulevard, volunteers from the junior class took a page from classic video games for their creation. Inspired by the Pixar animated feature, "Wreck it Ralph," students like Serene Gan gave the restaurant's windows the arcade game treatment.

The homecoming preparations moved into full gear on Saturday as dozens of students from each class decorated their respective hallways at the school.

In the high school annex, freshman Cassie Dearing put the final touches on a painting depicting the Lost Boys from "Peter Pan," while other students hung up decorations depicting the world of Neverland. Dearing said their painting alone had taken more than a day to complete with fellow students Brooke Pierce and Kendra Peterson starting that part of the project on Friday.

Meanwhile, sophomore Janet Dominguez sat on a ladder as she hung up wadded up pieces of crepe paper to create the illusion of a waterfall. Taking the "magic" theme to heart, the sophomore class was transforming their hallway into scenes from the animated film, "UP."

To promote the competitive spirit of homecoming week, the school began a series of athletic events between classes and sports teams. Action began Monday during a girls varsity versus junior varsity match at Eastside Park. It served as a lead-in to this year's macho man volleyball match later that evening.

Activities continued Tuesday afternoon as the girls sophomore, junior varsity and varsity volleyball squads clashed in the high school gym.

Events will move to Tiger Field at 7 p.m. today, Sept. 17, as the school's female junior and senior students compete in this year's powder puff football contest. Members of the school's football squads will serve as coaches during the game. Admission is $2 or a donation of two canned goods per person.

The interschool sports action will roll into Thursday as the boys varsity and junior varsity soccer teams compete at 4 p.m. at Eastside Park. Meanwhile, the girls sophomore, junior varsity and varsity volleyball squads will clash once again in the high school gym.

Homecoming week moves into full gear Friday afternoon with an assembly in the high school gym. Students are encouraged to show up that day in their orange and black attire as part of this year's Tiger Day.

The homecoming parade through Mountain Home will continue at 2 p.m. with pre-game festivities following at 4:30 p.m. during a tailgate party at Tiger Alley. The Mountain Home Tigers then put their pride on the line as they take on Jerome at 7 p.m. that evening.

Another homecoming tradition actually began last week as the school announced its candidates for this year's royal court. Men and women from each class were selected by their classmates by secret ballot.

School officials will crown this year's homecoming king during Friday's pep rally. The announcement of the homecoming queen will follow later that evening during halftime at the homecoming game.

Homecoming week winds down during the fall homecoming dance, which runs from 9 p.m. to midnight that night in the high school gym.
