Soccer teams struggle

Mountain Home's varsity soccer squads struggled on the field with both teams coming up empty during last week's conference action.

In boys soccer action, the Tigers played hard but came up on the short end following two conference games.

Skyview 5, Mountain Home 2

The Tigers lost their opening conference encounter of the season to the Skyview Hawks, 5-2, last week at Skyview.

Alex Dominguez and Juan Torres scored goals for the Tigers.

Jorge Salinas had 19 saves on goal as goalkeeper.

"The boys played really well," said Tiger boys soccer coach Mike Torres.

"I can't fault the boys, they work hard, they play hard, they never stop playing, they never gave up and showed a lot of heart in the game."

Bishop Kelly 3, Mountain Home 0

The Tigers hosted Bishop Kelly Thursday at Eastside Park and came up short to the Knights, 3-0.

The Tigers never got any balls through the net. Jorge Salinas had seven saves on goal.

In girls varsity action last week, the score didn't go the way Mountain Home's girls soccer coach or his Lady Tigers wanted to open conference play. They came up short to Skyview and Bishop Kelly last week.

Skyview 2, Mountain Home 1

The Mountain Home Lady Tigers dropped their conference opening girls soccer game to Skyview a week ago Monday, losing to the Lady Hawks 2-1.

Skyview took advantage of a bad pass to score a goal just 15 seconds into the game, but Jacey Carr scored just under four minutes later to tie the game.

Skyview scored again with 8:42 left in the first half to go up 2-1. Mountain Home had several close scoring attempts, including one that was nullified by an off-sides call.

Missy Jessup had 16 saves on goal as goalkeeper for Mountain Home.

Mountain Home girls soccer coach Kent Ogaard was hoping to open conference play with a win.

"I'd be lying if I didn't say I was disappointed with some of our efforts, especially in the first half," the coach said. "We didn't protect the ball enough and were losing the middle way too often.

"I think that first early goal kind of took the wind out of us a little bit," he added. "When you try to come from behind like that, it's a little tough. I think if we can generate a little more offense and keep everyone healthy," the team can do better, he said. "It was a good first conference game, but, again, I'd be lying if I didn't say I was disappointed. We'll retool and come back a little harder for BK."

Bishop Kelly 5, Mountain Home 0

Mountain Home traveled to Bishop Kelly last Wednesday to face the Lady Knights in conference play.

They battled Bishop Kelly tough, but were unable to get any shots in the net, and trailed 2-0 at the half, losing 5-0.

Coach Ogaard said the final score was not indicative of the way the game played out.

"The score doesn't reflect how our team played. We played outstanding. We made some adjustments from the Skyview game.

"We had a lot of heart and hustle and filled some holes where we weren't before. A lot was learned. I think anybody who knows Mountain Home-BK's history knows that was a game that they (BK) actually had to work for. Nothing was given to them easy.

"I think we had about six shots on goal, but couldn't get any to fall, but I think they (BK) kind of got a wake- up that we were ready to play, and we learned an extreme lot about how our team is going to from this point move forward and work on some of the fitness and positioning, but we were an entirely different team than BK's seen in the past, so overall, I was pleased with the effort."

Missy Jessup had 13 saves on goal as goalkeeper for the Lady Tigers.

Mountain Home hosted Middleton Monday. They travel to Twin Falls on Saturday.
