Mountain Home opened its volleyball season on the road at Mountain View in Meridian and gave the unbeaten 5A Lady Mavericks a battle before losing in four games.

Mountain Home started strong with a 25-19 first game win. They dropped the second game, 15-25, almost won the third game, losing 24-26, and dropped the fourth game, 20-25, to lose the match three games to one.

"We really came out swinging against 5A Mountain View," said Mountain Home volleyball coach Jill Peterson. "I think we took them by surprise with our energy and scrappiness.

"Although we only had six players tonight due to injury and illness, those six played hard. I was really pleased with the positive energy and our all-out effort. It was a great opening match, despite the loss."

Demery Dean had 14 kills for the Lady Tigers. Mattie Bennett had 13 kills, Jessica Ruffing had nine kills and seven assists, and Ksyenya Peterson had 20 assists and three aces.

This week the Lady Tigers opened conference play Tuesday night at Bishop Kelly and go to Twin Falls Saturday for the Twin Falls Invitational Tournament.

Their first home match is Sept. 16 against Skyview.
