Monday, September 1, 2014

A 31-year-old Boise woman was killed Saturday in a wrong-way head-on crash on Interstate 84.

According to Idaho State Police, Kelly Berry was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of I-84 at milepost 95 at roughly 1:30 a.m. in a 2000 Saturn LS.

She is believed to have entered the freeway by going on the exit ramp at Exit 99.

The driver of this vehicle involved in the collision actually survived.

ISP was already responding to a call from Elmore County dispatch of reports of a wrong-way driver moving "at a high rate of speed" on the interstate when the crash occurred between the on and off ramps at Exit 95.

Anthony D. Benavidez, 18, of Hazelton, was traveling eastbound at the same location in a Chevy pickup truck and was struck head on by Berry's vehicle.

Berry was pronounced dead at the scene.

Benavidez was transported via air ambulance to St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise, where he was reported in serious but stable condition.

Berry was wearing a seatbelt; Benavidez was not. The violence of the collision destroyed both vehicles.

The crash remains is under investigation by the Idaho State Police. Mountain Home Police Department, Idaho Department of Transportation, the Elmore County Sheriff's Department, Elmore County extrication and Air St. Lukes all were involved at the scene in dealing with the accident.
