Boys' soccer season opens Saturday versus Borah

The Mountain Home Tigers open their boys soccer season Saturday at home against Borah.

Mike Torres takes over as Tiger boys head soccer coach and is pleased with the turnout.

"We had 35 kids try out this year. We had 18 on varsity and 17 on JV, so it was a pretty good turnout," the coach said

Torres admits that he's equally pleased with the quality of the players he has out for this season.

"We have a solid returning senior bunch and some underclassmen that are going to fill the spots really good, so I'm pretty confident about this year's season," he said

Coach Torres hopes to build upon the momentum from last year's state experience.

"They did really well last year, so we're hoping to build on it and continue on with their success," the coach said. "They're a solid bunch of kids. They've got some good leaders on there and some seniors that are going to step up this year, so I'm real confident in what we have."

Coach Torres believes they should be strong in the midfield and at strikers this season.

"We've got a solid midfield crew and a pretty good tandem of strikers on top that we feel real good about," he said.

Saturday's home game against Borah is a non-league game, and Torres believes the Lions will be a good test for his Tigers.

"That's a 5A school and from what I remember in years past, they've always been in the top teams in the state," the coach said. "It should be a good test for us to see how we're going to be, so we're looking forward to it for seeing where we're at."
