Funeral services for Joanne Smith, 72, of Giddings, Texas, are scheduled for 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 25, 2014 at St. Margaret's Catholic Church in Giddings with Father James Olnhausen officiating. Burial will follow in the Giddings City Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 24, 2014 from 7 a.m. until 9 p.m. and on Wednesday, June 25, 2014, from 7 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Giddings. The family will be present for visitation Tuesday evening from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. A Rosary will be recited Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Joanne Heller Smith was born on Nov. 27, 1941 in Boise, Idaho. She was raised on a ranch in Hammett, Idaho, where she was an avid horse rider and an excellent student. She graduated, with honors, from the University of Idaho.

In 1970, she moved to Bryan, Texas, where she was a medical technologist and laboratory manager at St. Joseph Regional Health Center. In 1989, she became reacquainted with her soul-mate, Dorwin Smith.

She moved to Wasilla, Alaska, where she served on the Alaska State Board of Nursing and worked for Valley Hospital in Palmer, Alaska, from which she retired.

In 2008, Joanne and Dorwin built a house in Giddings, Texas. In Giddings, she was a member of the Giddings New Horizons Club and a faithful member of St. Margret's Catholic Church. Joanne loved gardening, but most of all she loved her family.

Wherever Joanne lived, she was known for her hospitality. She had a smile that would light up any room and always had a kind word for everyone. Joanne passed away unexpectedly the morning of Thursday, June 19, 2014, at her home in Giddings.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Joanne is survived by her husband, Dorwin Smith of Giddings; two daughters and sons-in-law, Teri and Mike Belyeu of Giddings and Kristine and Chris Boehm of Florence, Mont.; six grandchildren, Ashton Booth and her husband Caleb of Giddings; Brittany Belyeu of Giddings; Heather Belyeu of Giddings; Regan Boehm of Florence, Mont.; Kendall Boehm of Florence, Mont.; and Garrett Boehm of Florence, Mont.; and a sister and brother-in-law, Diane and Chuck Robertson of Boise, Idaho.

Serving as pallbearers will be Caleb Booth, Dennis Smith, Brian Smith, Lance Smith, Steve Jatzlau, Tim Langham and Brian Fischer. Honorary pallbearers will be Garrett Boehm, Marcus Escalante and Marty Bigham.

Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.
