John Filipovich

John Henry Filipovich, 80, of Mountain Home, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by family, on Friday, April 25, 2014.

On Thursday, May 1, at Rost Funeral Home, McMurtrey Chapel, a viewing will be held from 4:30 p.m. to the 6 p.m. rosary. A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m., on Friday, May 2, Our Lady of Good Counsel. Burial with military honors will follow at Mountain View Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Rost Funeral Home, McMurtrey Chapel in Mountain Home.

John was born Aug. 20, 1933, in Greentree, Pa.

In 1953, John joined the U.S. Air Force and started his military career.

He married Charlotte Ibert on Feb. 12, 1955, in Reading, Pa., and together they had four children.

John's military career took them to several locations throughout the world. During his 21 years of service, Flip, as he was known, was a crew chief for the 55th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing. He was also a Vietnam veteran and reached the rank of master sergeant. They were transferred to Mountain Home Air Force Base in 1972 where he retired in 1974.

Following retirement, he continued to work civil service for another 20 years.

In 2009, John married Betty Shanks, who he enjoyed spending time with and with whom he spent his remaining years.

John was an active member of the Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus, serving two terms as the Grand Knight.

John enjoyed bowling, golfing, playing horseshoes and spending time with his children and grandchildren, where he especially enjoyed watching them participate in sports.

One of his favorite things to do was buy a new pickup every couple of years.

Flip loved being a part of the McDonalds early morning coffee club with his friends where they discussed and probably solved all the world's problems.

John is survived by his wife, Betty, and his four children, son John Filipovich Jr. (wife Teresa), daughters Katrina Wilson (husband Ken), Fran Hicks (husband Kent) and Stephanie Mills (husband Mike); ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. John is also survived by his sisters, Dolores Becker and Barbara Costa.

John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Frances, wife Charlotte and sister Joan.
