Thursday, April 24, 2014

The Mountain Home Lady Tigers saw their losing skid reach six before picking up conference wins over Columbia and Nampa.

Filer 17, Mountain Home 7

(5 innings)

Filer pounded out 14 hits and took advantage of seven Mountain Home errors in downing the Lady Tigers 17-7 in five innings last week at Filer High School.

Filer led 7-0 after two innings. Mountain Home put four runs on the board in the third inning, but the Lady Wildcats added six in the bottom of the frame to increase their lead to 13-4.

Mountain Home got three more in the top of the fourth to make it 1-7, but the Lady Wildcats added four more in the bottom half of the inning to make it a 10-run spread. A scoreless fifth for Mountain Home ended the game, 17-7, by the 10-run rule.

"Filer did a great job of hitting the ball today and we didn't," said Mountain Home softball coach Ron Nicolosi. "We relied on Filer to make mistakes instead of creating our own opportunities offensively."

Ashten Harrigan had two hits and drove in a run for the Lady Tigers. Maeghan Pomerantz had a hit, two RBIs and scored two runs. Heather Adams had a hit and RBI and Madi Karst and Teresa Fredell also had hits. Karst scored two runs. Heather Adams suffered the loss.

Emmett 8, Mountain Home 3

Mountain Home hosted Emmett last week in conference softball and battled the Lady Huskies tough before losing 8-3 at Memmelaar Field in Mountain Home.

A four-run third inning gave Emmett a commanding 5-0 lead. The Lady Tigers battled back to cut the deficit to 5-3 after five, but could come no closer, as they lost 8-3.

Coach Nicolosi was pleased with his girls' efforts, despite the loss.

"We challenged a few of them and they really stepped up and did well at the plate," he said. "Even with our mistakes, we played real well, and were right there in the ball game."

Mountain Home had nine hits in the game, led by Madi Karst, who went three for three and scored twice. Heather Adams had two hits. Taylor Reed and Teresa Fredell both had RBI-singles, Ashten Harrigan smacked a double and Kendra Castillo also had a hit.

Heather Adams suffered the loss, despite giving up just four earned runs while striking out six.

Mountain Home 8, Columbia 6

The Lady Tigers built up an 8-1 lead and hung on for an 8-6 conference victory at Columbia Thursday.

Mountain Home took a 2-0 lead in the second, added another run in the third and two more in the fourth to go up 5-0.

Columbia got on the scoreboard in the sixth to make it 5-1. The Lady Tigers built their lead to 8-1 in the top of the seventh and withstood a five-run rally by Columbia in the bottom of the seventh for the 8-6 win, snapping a six-game losing skid.

"We played a fairly good game," said Coach Nicolosi. "We kept our mistakes to a minimum and had great poise when we did make one."

Ashten Harrigan had three hits, including a double, and drove in two runs. Heather Adams, Madi Karst and McKenna Lewis each had two hits, including doubles. Karst and Lewis both had an RBI. Taylor Reed and Kendra Castillo also had hits.

McKenna Lewis went the distance in the pitcher's circle and got the win, striking out four batters.

Mountain Home 20, Nampa 1

(5 innings)

An 11-run inning helped Mountain Home to a 20-1 five-inning conference win over Nampa Friday at West Park in Nampa.

Mountain Home had 18 hits in the game, led by Heather Adams, McKenna Lewis and Morgan Vivier, who each had three hits, including doubles. Adams had two doubles and she and Vivier both drove in four runs, Lewis one. Vivier also scored three runs.

Taylor Reed and Maeghan Pomerantz both had two hits. Pomerantz' were both doubles and she drove in three runs. Reed drove in one.

Teresa Fredell, Ashten Harrigan, Kalleen Hodgerson, Kendra Castillo and Madi Karst also had hits, Fredell scored four runs and knocked in one, Harrigan scored two, Hodgerson and Castillo both drove in two and Karst one.

Heather Adams picked up the win, striking out four while giving up nine hits. Nampa's lone run was unearned.

"This was a great win for us, but the real thing that stands out to me is the consistency we have played with over the last three games," said Coach Nicolosi. "We came into this game with a chip on our shoulder due to the fact that we lost to them at home. We left 12 runners on base in our first meeting with Nampa and we wanted to improve on that performance."

The Lady Tigers have another busy week. They hosted Caldwell for a conference doubleheader on Monday. They host Skyview on Thursday and Bishop Kelly on Friday.
