Senior volunteers honored

More than 50 people were honored last week for their service to the local senior center.

In a ceremony last week, the Mountain Home Senior Center paused to recognize its network of volunteers and their contributions to supporting others in the local community.

During the April 9 event, senior center president Ruthada Powell read off the names of nearly 50 individuals, who keep the center's various programs running.

As part of the ceremony, Mayor Tom Rist presented gold medals to each volunteer.

Over a 12-month period, those people contributed more than 6,000 hours of their time at the local center, Powell said.

In addition to the volunteers that support the senior center's daily operations, another 15 individuals delivered hot meals to elderly people and shut-ins through the center's meals on wheels program.

In 2013, those drivers accumulated roughly 6,000 miles to reach those people.
