Legion sets up drop box for used flags

Friday, March 21, 2014
The box, for flags only, is at War Memorial Hall.

The American Legion set up a drop box last week to collect worn and unserviceable U.S. flags from people in the Mountain Home community.

Painted in red, white and blue colors, the drop box is located in front of the Legion's Post 26 headquarters at 515 East 2nd South St.

Throughout the year, the American Legion posts in Mountain Home collect unserviceable American flags, which are then retired during an official ceremony held each year in conjunction with Flag Day.

Each year, the American Legion properly disposes of more than 350 flags during these dignified events, said Jack Schafhausen, Post 26 commander.

"The flag of our county should be properly disposed of; not just thrown away," Schafhausen said.

For more information on the new drop box or flag etiquette, call the post headquarters at 587-3447.
