District plans to rename base school

Thursday, March 6, 2014

The Mountain Home School District board of trustees will hold a pair of public meetings starting next week regarding a proposal to rename one of its elementary schools.

District officials are looking at renaming the Base Primary School to Stephensen Elementary School.

If approved, the school would be named in honor of Col. Mark Stephensen, a pilot from Mountain Home Air Force Base who was killed during the Vietnam War. The name would transfer from the base's former middle school, which was demolished last year.

The first public hearing will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Base Primary School gymnasium at the local Air Force base. The second meeting starts at 7 p.m. March 18 at the school district administration office at 470 North 3rd East St. in Mountain Home.

People may submit written testimony by sending letters to Sharon Whitman, board of trustees clerk, at P.O. Box 1390 in Mountain Home or via e-mail at whitman_sm@mtnhomesd.org. Written testimony is due by 5 p.m. Monday.

Those wanting comment at the meetings must sign up at the beginning of the meeting or by filling out a public input form available at each meeting. Individuals are allowed up to three minutes to provide testimony with those representing a group limited to five minutes.

The hearings are limited to the renaming proposal, and the district will not accept comments regarding other district issues.
