Night of poor shooting stymies Lady Tigers' team

Thursday, January 16, 2014

Another night of poor shooting from the field hindered the Mountain Home Lady Tigers last Wednesday as they came up short against Middleton, 52-41, during a home game at Lloyd Schiller Gymnasium.

The Lady Tigers came out aggressive on defense, fighting the state's third-ranked 4A team to a seven-point tie after a quarter.

A three-pointer by Madi Karst at the start of the second quarter gave Mountain Home a 10-7 lead before Middleton came back with a 9-2 run to go up, 16-12.

A five-point run, capped off by Tracey Gordon's basket, put the Lady Tigers up by one with 2:36 left in the half. But Middleton scored the final four points of the half to go to the locker room up, 20-17.

Middleton outscored the Lady Tigers, 16-11, in the third quarter to take a 36-28 lead into the fourth. The team's biggest lead was 52-37 before the Lady Tigers scored the final four points of the game.

"I thought effort-wise we did a great job," said Mountain Home Lady Tigers coach Brent Keener after the game. "I thought we, again, had some great shots that didn't go down."

Mountain Home shot just 20 percent from the field, hitting two of its 11 three-pointers. The team hit just 61 percent of its free throws.

Mattie Bennett led the Lady Tigers in scoring with 15 points, including 14 in the second half. Madi Karst added 10 points, Tracey Gordon had eight, Jacci Cristobal dropped in four, Sable Lohmeier sank three, and Whitney Sandberg put away one.

D'Rae Tullock led the Middleton girls with 28 points and 12 rebounds.

"She's tough -- she is a handful," said Coach Keener regarding Middleton's six-foot senior. "She's big, she's fast and she's strong. I thought at times we did a really good job with her, and then at other times we sort of lost sight of where she was and she hurt us."

Middleton shot 36 percent from the field, hitting only one of its 10 treys. The squad went 11 for 20 from the foul line.

Meanwhile, Middleton won the battle of the boards, 41-25. Madi Karst had seven rebounds and Mattie Bennett added another six to lead Mountain Home.

The Lady Tigers hosted Columbia on Tuesday for Mountain Home's Blackout Night. The squad travels to Emmett on Friday for a girls-boys varsity contest against Emmett.
