Letter to the Editor

Remember the troops in your holiday thoughts

Wednesday, November 27, 2013

Dear editor:

The holiday season is upon us and during this time of giving the base's public affairs office frequently receives questions from citizens asking how they can say thank you to service members serving abroad and at home.

In the past, organizations have led city-wide efforts to collect postcards and messages of thanks to be sent to any service member or wounded warrior. However, due to security concerns and postal service regulations, this practice is no longer accepted. This doesn't mean that military members don't like to receive mail, but it's required to be addressed to a specific airman, soldier, sailor or Marine. If you're interested in sending a postcard or letter, our office recommends reaching out to family members and friends in the Armed Forces and letting them know you're grateful for their sacrifices and chosen service.

Further information about sending mail to military members is available on the U.S. Postal Service website.

Other ways to say thank you are contributing to charitable organizations that support military veterans and wounded warriors. There are several not-for-profits that provide a great service to our men and women who've served. However, be careful to select a reputable and credible organization.

For many, the holiday season is about family, and being separated isn't easy for anyone. Being stationed across the globe requires sacrifices, but most military members will tell you that they love their job and are proud to serve.

Please remember these men and women as you celebrate this holiday season by simply taking a moment or dedicating a thought to a service member is all the thanks we need.
