Only city races face elections; others cancelled

Friday, September 27, 2013

The deadline for write-in candidates to file for the local fire and recreation district elections has passed. The elections in those districts have all been canceled and the 11 unopposed candidates in those districts will be declared elected following the Nov. 5 local taxing districts elections.

Write-in candidates for the City of Glenns Ferry and the City of Mountain Home still have until Oct. 8 to file for office. City elections cannot be cancelled. They must be held regardless of how many candidates file for each available elected office.

Incumbents Alain Isaac and Richard Urquidi, and former city councilman Geoff Schroeder, are all running for the two at-large city council positions in Mountain Home. Schroeder had declined to run in the last election in order to pursue some advanced schooling at BSU.

Glenns Ferry will have a new mayor after incumbent Joanne Lanham decided not to seek re-election. Seeking to replace her are Marvin Drewrey and Connie Wills.

For Glenns Ferry City Council, Larry Stevenson, Robert Janousek, Ralph Everett Jones, Joyce Ashton and Charlie Winter are vying for two at-large city council seats. None are incumbents.

All four fire districts and both recreation districts in Elmore County had only one candidate who filed for each available elected office.

Those six elections have, by law, been cancelled and the candidates who filed the proper paperwork for candidacy will be declared elected after the official canvass of elections.

Mollie Marsh will retain her District 3 seat on the Western Elmore County Recreation District. Marsh is the only remaining member from the original board when the district was created 13 years ago.

The Eastern Elmore County Recreation District will see incumbents Cinda Gennette from District 1 and Mark Martell from District 2 retain their posts.

Steve Cramer will be the new Atlanta Rural Fire Department's District 2 commissioner. He filed as a write-in. That post is currently held by Mary Drake, who chose not to run again.

Tom Ducharme from District 1 and Larry "Slick" Jewett from District 2 will retain their posts on the Mountain Home Rural Fire Protection District.

Frank Brady will be the new District 1 commissioner for the Oasis Volunteer Fire District and Spike Ericson will be the new District 3 commissioner. Incumbents Ken Johnson and Monte MacConnell chose not to re-election.

Three write-in candidates filed for the King Hill Rural Fire District after no one filed by the original deadline to get on the ballot.

John Walker will be the commissioner for District 1, an District 2 Greg Snyder will represent District 2, and District 3 Cliff Lisle will hold the District 3 seat.

The district, which hadn't held a legal election in years, was attempting to hit the "reset" button. As a result, the District 1 position is for a two-year initial term and and those for District 2 and 3 are for four-year terms.

Voters also are being urged to pre-register for the Nov. 5 elections by Oct. 11 at 5 p.m. at the county courthouse. Anyone who has changed their name or moved must re-register with the county. Voters can also register the day of the election at the polls. Voters must present a photo ID and something indicating their current address while registering.

Registration details and requirements can be obtained by calling the county elections office at 587-2136 ext. 206.
