Soccer squad falls to Skyview, ties Emmett

The Mountain Home Tigers came away with a tie and a loss last week in conference boys soccer.

The Tigers lost at home to Skyview, but bounced back to beat Emmett at Emmett.

Skyview 3, Mountain Home 1

The Tigers got a physical battle from Skyview last Tuesday at Eastside Park, losing to the Hawks 3-1.

Two of Skyview's scores came on penalty kicks close to the net on questionable calls that set up the kicks.

The Tigers trailed 2-0 at halftime.

"We weren't expecting this -- we just came out in left field and played sluggish the first half and couldn't recover," said Tiger boys soccer coach Jay Lockett.

"We controlled the ball in the second half and did what we wanted to do, but just couldn't finish. They were jamming with eight people in the middle of the box, so it's hard to get through that eight-man middle."

Keko Sanchez scored the Tigers' only goal.

Jack Richelieu had 12 saves on goal as goalkeeper.

Mountain Home 2, Emmett 2

The Tigers traveled to Emmett last Thursday to take on the Huskies in conference play and left with a 2-2 tie.

"We played a great first half, but we had a let down in the second half to let them back in the game," said Coach Lockett. "We just need to learn how to play a full game, but we are in a great position to finish strong."

Keko Sanchez and Alex Dominguez scored goals for Mountain Home.

Jack Richelieu had 13 saves on goal.

The Tigers take a 4-2-1 record into this week's games. They were at Kuna on Monday and travel to Caldwell on Thursday to start the second time through the conference schedule.

This week we start an up-close look at the Tiger boys soccer team, looking at three members of the 2013 Tiger boys soccer team:

SHAUN HOLLAND

Shaun Holland is a junior defender on the Mountain Home Tigers boys soccer squad. Shaun is excited about this year's Tiger soccer team.

"We've got a really good team this year, and we're doing a lot better than previous years. We're working really well together and a lot of the fundamentals we got down really quick. Everybody's doing really good."

Shaun says this year's squad won't be happy without a trip to state and a championship trophy.

"We've been trying for a long time and I think this is the year that we're going to get it. We're doing very good this year. We've only lost to BK (Bishop Kelly), and that's who we usually lose to, but we played a really good game against them and we're looking forward to get back at 'em when they come here."

Shaun is the son of Dave and Kathi Holland.

CHANCE LLEWELLYN

Chance Llewellyn is a senior center defender for the Tigers this season and is also excited about the season they are having this year. He talked about some of the keys behind that success.

"We have a lot of good communication going between everybody, we have a strong defense, and an amazing goalie. Our offense is really quick this year, and they're really good at passing and playing as a team, instead of trying to play as individuals. We're playing as a family."

Most important to the "family" this year is making it to state and bringing home a trophy, he said.

"We are planning on going to state and making something of ourselves this year," said Chance, the son of Dana Newby.

DAVID ARCINIEGA

David Arciniega is a junior midfielder for the Tigers this season. David thinks the key to this year's success centers around their desire.

"We want it more. We want districts more. We want state more. We're just committed to what we're doing right now, and we're really staying on top of things. It's been a while since our school has won state or districts, so we really want to represent our school and make our parents and our people proud and our fans proud."

David is the son of Janet and Gilbert Arciniega.
