Friday, August 16, 2013
The West Nile Virus, which is carried by mosquitoes, can cause flu-like symptoms in humans, but in rare cases can cause death.

The Elmore County Pest Abatement District has received two positive tests for West Nile Virus from mosquitoes trapped near Hammett over the past week.

District implemented the preventative measures needed to help control the population which began the later part of May. Surveying, dipping in known water sources, larva control and fogging continue in an effort to effectively minimize mosquito populations.

Unusually high temperatures enhanced the mosquitoes' hatching in many areas. Elmore County residents are being asked to help control the spread of West Nile Virus by practicing effective prevention and reporting to the WNV hotline any areas of standing water or locations of severe mosquito outbreaks. Call 1-866-884-2891 or the count extension office at 587-2136 Ext. 509.

The best way to reduce mosquito-borne diseases is through mosquito control and personal protection. To prevent mosquitoes from entering your home, inspect windows and replace any screens that have holes or tears. Empty all containers that catch water such as buckets, old tires and wheel barrels. Replace water in your water fountains and bird baths frequently.

Residents who have a pond or water feature should treat it with mosquito dunks. Dunks have Bacillus thuringiensis, which is a naturally occurring bacterium common in soils throughout the world. The County Extension office can provide the dunks at no cost.
