Participants start their trek around the Glenns Ferry School sports complex to start last year's Relay for Life event.

Nearly a score of teams have signed up for the 2013 Elmore County Relay for Life.

The event will take place at the Glenns Ferry School sports complex this weekend, June 14-15.

And as of late last month, team members had already raised an estimated $20,000. Last year the Elmore County Relay for Life chapter raised $39,000 for the American Cancer Society.

"I really think the relay event this year is oriented towards getting the general public out to enjoy an evening of live music and an opportunity to learn more about the American Cancer Society and its mission, as well as a chance for those affected by cancer to come and get emotional support knowing that they are not alone," said Jan Landon, chair of the Elmore County Chapter of Relay for Life.

The event starts at 6:57 p.m. Friday night, June 14, with a celebration ceremony honoring cancer survivors and their caregivers.

From 8-9:30 p.m. Third Take will provide live music, and relay teams will have booths with food and games.

A Memory Garden will be created with luminaria. Anyone wanting to decorate a luminary to honor someone they know who has cancer or has lost their battle with the disease should contact Relay for Life. They also can leave a message on a memory wall.

There will be information and education available about the American Cancer Society programs and ways to prevent the risk of cancer.

Other events include a Car Smash for those wanting to "take a hammer to cancer," and a dance contest where the public is invited to "Boogie Their Bootie and Boogie Cancer right off the track. " Winners of the dance contest will receive prizes and a chance to win the grand prizes -- a lawn mower and ping pong table donated by Sears.

There will be a Purple Couch Photo Booth with a professional photographer and pictures can be taken of individuals, groups, families, etc.

Teams will be holding raffles and the grand prize winners will be announced at 9 p.m.

At 9:30 p.m. the public is invited to participate in the luminaria ceremony.

"This is a solemn time when we reflect on those who have lost their battle with cancer and those fighting cancer" Landon said.

Luminaria from the Memory Garden will line the track with lights in them. "This is a reflective time and a chance to be with others having the same feelings as you," Landon offered.

After the luminaria ceremony there will be more live music and games until midnight.

The public is invited to stay as long as they wish and enjoy a free "Appreciation Breakfast" at 6 a.m. Saturday.

Relay Teams will stay on the track until 7 a.m. on Saturday when the event will officially close with a "Fight Back Ceremony."

"If you are an early riser or just want a great way to start your day, come for breakfast and help us close the relay event," Landon invited.

She reminds those attending and participating that Relay for Life is an American Cancer Society event and there is no smoking, no alcohol and no pets allowed on the school grounds. Participants are asked to avoid bringing glass containers onto the field.

Chapter members are asking everybody to wear purple on Friday to show "The Power of Purple" in the fight against cancer and show support for those affected by cancer.
