Shame on BIA for not allowing transfer of land to local tribe

Wednesday, May 1, 2013

Dear editor:

It appears from your news that the Bureau of Indian Affairs won't be redeeming an old reputation very soon in Idaho.

I find it nearly impossible to believe that a private individual of native culture is having difficulty giving land to his tribe. Can I say "unconstitutional?" This is terrible, if true.

I hope to see further news of this disgraceful situation and I hope it is good news. I'd like to march on this cause. Can the generous person sell it for $1.

-- Frances Ericson

Editor's note: The incident we believe you are referring to involves the effort to will a parcel of land between Mountain Home and Boise, part of an individual's estate, to the Duck Valley tribes. That matter is tied up in the federal courts at present.
