Choirs schedule end-of-year concerts

Wednesday, May 1, 2013

Students representing the local high school and junior high school choirs will take the stage later this month for their final public performance of the season.

The choir concert will start at 7 p.m. May 20 in Lloyd Schiller Gymnasium at Mountain Home High School.

Selections for the upcoming concert will focus on the theme "Karaoke greatest hits."

"Come hear some of your favorite hits from the 70s through today sung in three- and four-part harmonies," said choir director Michael Stear. "Who knows? There may even be a chance for you to sing along."

Featured songs will include selections from Elvis Presley and Shaniah Twain as well as 80s bands Journey and Men Without Hats.

This year's junior high school choir includes 52 students with another 100 students performing with the high school's five choir ensembles. For a majority of these teens, the choir program is something they return to every year, according to Stear.

"Obviously, many of them do it simply because they love music," he added.

But in some cases, being part of the choir means much more, the choir director added. To a point, the students consider it being part of a unique family.

"They come together for a common purpose -- to make beautiful music together," Stear said.
