Crossing guards threatened

Wednesday, April 10, 2013

Dear editor:

I was walking to work this morning and the crossing guard at American Legion and 10th (Maverick corner) was terribly shaken up. She shared with me that she had been nearly hit, yet again, by a car that had nearly hit her a while back. The driver mouthed "sorry" but that did little to soothe the crossing guard's nerves.

I did crossing guard duty at the very intersection 16 years ago. I was nearly hit numerous times and I saw close calls with many students as well. Texting hadn't been invented yet, and very few people talked on cell phones while driving a that time in history, so those two distractions weren't even variables in the equation of that dangerous intersection.

Students from MHHS, MHJHS, Hacker Middle School and many adults cross at that intersection on a daily basis.

Please be "hyper-alert" when driving there, and remind your teen drivers to do the same. Thanks.
