Vance Baldwin, 52, of Pine and Boise, died Friday afternoon when his 4-wheel ATV missed a curve on Rocky Bar Road and plunged down a 30-foot embankment.

The accident occurred about a half mile south of the James Creek Road while Baldwin was recreating in the Rocky Bar area with family. A member of his family had been following him but had fallen behind and did not witness the accident. The ATV was spotted in the ravine by a passerby who reported it to the Elmore County Sheriff's Office at about 3 p.m. The body was recovered by sheriff's deputies and LifeFlight personnel.

Baldwin was a volunteer EMT in the Pine area and also a fireman in Boise.

Deputy Fred Peterson, who investigated the accident, said there was no indication alcohol was involved. Rather, he said, "it appears he just missed the curve."

So very sorry about Vance. I trained with him and Kate and had the utmost respect for their efforts and professionalism. To Kate - you are an amazing person and the community is so very lucky you moved there. Personally, you kept me inspired until I could no longer be inspired. Am so very sorry for your loss. God bless you.

There were 5 atv's in our group who made the ride to Atlanta over the July 4th holiday from Featherville, and we saw several places that were very scary drop off's. So sad to hear someone lost control on a very nice ride. :-(
