The snow fence on Highway 20 is actually a double row of trees planted on the north side of the road to provide a natural barrier to the snow that regularly drifts across the highway.
Looking to improve public safety while cutting back on maintenance costs, the Idaho Department of Transportation recently finished work on a natural snow fence on U.S. Highway 20.

Crews from the transportation department's maintenance unit in Mountain Home installed the 1,600-foot "living snow fence" along the highway between mileposts 109 and 110 about 19 miles northeast of Mountain Home.
