After Bishop Kelly loss, Lady Tigers beat Preston, Jerome

Thursday, March 29, 2012

With their last two games postponed by wet weather, the Mountain Home Lady Tigers softball team finally got a chance to play last Tuesday.

However, the affects of not playing showed as the team dropped a conference game to Bishop Kelly before the Lady Tigers bounced back with wins over Preston and Jerome.

Bishop Kelly 9, Mountain Home 3

The Lady Tigers suffered their first loss of the young softball season March 20, losing to Bishop Kelly, 9-3, at Memmelaar Field in Mountain Home.

Bishop Kelly scored two runs in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead. The Lady Tigers got one run back in the third, but the Lady Knights scored one in the fourth and four in the fifth to go up, 7-1.

Mountain Home got two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but Bishop Kelly countered with two in the top of the seventh to make it a 9-3 final.

"It was just a real lack-luster performance," said Mountain Home Lady Tigers softball coach Chris Asbury of the Bishop Kelly loss. "We just weren't focused and made quite a few errors."

In all aspects of the game, the team definitely didn't come ready to play, and it showed, the coach added.

"Our performance on the field was well below our expectations," Asbury said.

Krissy Elliott had two hits and drove in a run for Mountain Home. Madi Karst and Brittney Karst both had doubles, with Karst knocking in two runs. Heather Adams, Courtney Christiansen, Maegan Pomerantz and Morgan Vivier also had hits.

Pitcher Heather Adams suffered the loss -- her first in three decisions.

Mountain Home 8, Preston 3

The Lady Tigers traveled to Jerome on Friday for a non-conference game against Preston with Mountain Home beating the Lady Indians, 8-3.

Mountain Home spotted Preston three runs in the first inning but scored two in the second.

The Lady Tigers grabbed the lead for good with two runs in the third. They added three more in the fourth and another one in the fifth on their way to a win.

"It was a good effort to bounce back," said Coach Asbury regarding the Preston win. "I'm really proud of them for that.

The team had three or four opportunities to really break it open and didn't necessarily do that, the coach added.

"(We) could have finished them off a lot earlier but got a good bounce-back win and gave us some momentum going into the Jerome game," Asbury said.

The Lady Tigers pounded out 15 hits against the Lady Indians. Brittney Karst and Courtney Christiansen both had three hits with Karst adding three doubles and three RBIs. Christiansen had two triples and knocked in a run.

Madison Siefferman and Maeghan Pomerantz finished the evening with had two hits with Siefferman adding a double and a triple. Krissy Elliott, Madi Karst, Morgan Vivier, Teresa Fredell and Ashley Sessions also had hits with Heather Adams knocking in a run.

Adams, who was replaced in the circle as pitcher by Madi Karst in the fourth inning due to an injury while batting in the top of the fourth, recorded the win to improve to 3-1. Karst earned the save.

Mountain Home 8, Jerome 7

Mountain Home battled back from behind twice to down Jerome in an 8-7 thriller on Friday.

Mountain Home scored twice in the top of the first, but Jerome pushed across three runs in the bottom half to go up 3-2.

The Lady Tigers tied the game at 3 in the second and went up by one in the top of the third. However, Jerome came back with three more in the bottom of the inning to go up 6-4.

Madison Siefferman's three-run home run in the top of the fourth inning put Mountain Home up by a run. Jerome tied it back up with a run in the bottom half of the inning, but Mountain Home scored what proved to be the winning run in the sixth.

"Winning one-run ball games gives you some good character, and using both pitchers in both games shows we've got some depth there," Coach Asbury said. "We went with a couple different lineups, and these non-conference games are all about that -- seeing what we have and different options for when we get back into conference."

Madison Siefferman led Mountain Home's 15-hit attack with four hits, including a home run, and drove in four runs. Krissy Elliott had three hits and scored three runs.

Courtney Christiansen, Maeghan Pomerantz and Morgan Vivier each had two hits with Christiansen and Vivier adding RBIs for the Lady Tigers. Madi Karst had a double and an RBI with Brittney Karst adding a hit.

Heather Adams came on in relief of Madi Karst and pitched the final five innings, striking out six, and got the win to improve to 4-1 on the season.

The Lady Tigers will play in the annual Idaho Sporting Goods Tourney on Friday and Saturday.

"This will give us an opportunity to see some different lineups and players in different positions as we face some good 5A competition," Coach Asbury said. "We have a pretty tough draw, tentatively, but if our girls continue to play like we showed Friday night, I have the utmost faith that we'll perform well."

The Lady Tigers will play Friday in Meridian to take on Eagle and Rocky Mountain. On Saturday, the team returns to Meridian to face Hillcrest and Mountain View.
