Sophomore helps team net state title

Danny Brescia hoists the championship cup after he helped Canyon County Coyotes win their state title. He was the only player from Mountain Home to play with Coyotes' varsity team.

A sophomore from Mountain Home High School helped lead a local hockey franchise to a state title during a championship game held earlier this month.

Danny Brescia was the only player from Mountain Home to play with the Canyon County Coyotes -- a competitive hockey club featuring athletes from surrounding communities.

According to team representatives, many of these players come from high schools that have no hockey clubs or receive their education through home schooling.

The Coyotes competed from September to March at Idaho Ice World in Boise with the Idaho Amateur Hockey Association's yearly tournament held in Sun Valley. Sporting 14 teams, it was the largest event of its kind in state history, a team spokesman said.

Brescia and the Coyotes went on to beat the Sun Valley Suns in a 4-2 contest to take their first-ever state championship crown.

While Brescia is the only Mountain Home player on the team's varsity squad, Will Oppedyk plays for the Coyote's junior varsity unit.
