Bullies, cyber safety highlight school briefing

People in the online world use a system of acronyms or Internet "shorthand" to chat back and forth across cyber space. While most of this dialog is generally considered "safe" banter, other terms could serve as "red flags" that could represent attempts by an online predator to solicit personal information from a child or teen. This illustration outlines some of the more common phrases listed in the Internet Lindo Dictionary from the Idaho Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.

Bullies and the risks that teens face on the Internet highlighted a series of briefings last week aimed at educating local junior high school students.

Hosted by the Mountain Home Police Department and RTI-Rural Telecom, the briefings were aimed at breaking the chain of emotional abuse in addition to educating students about criminal activity targeting them when they go online.
