Missing fisherman found dead in Elmore County

Wednesday, July 13, 2011

Arthur Schafer, 58, of Nampa, who had been missing since July 7, was found dead in the Bread Winner Creek area on the middle fork of the Boise River in Elmore County Tuesday.

Elmore County Sheriff's Office Deputies, who found the body, said it appeared that he may have died from an accidental gunshot wound.

His family had indicated that he left Nampa last Thursday, telling them he was going fishing. He apparently went alone.

An Idaho Fish and Game officer had reported seeing Schafer's vehicle and a second call also was received by a citizen reporting the location of the vehicle Tuesday. Nampa police had issued a description of Schafer's vehicle earlier in the week.

Schafer's body was found at about 7:30 p.m. late that night in the remote area of the county near Atlanta. Initial indications are that a shotgun he had with him may have accidentally discharged, killing him. There were indications he may have been doing some target shooting at the time.

The investigation is continuing and no further details were immediately available.
